I have a 1990 w/4.2 5sp.man. Can I do away with smog pump & lines, some vacuum lines, replace my air cleaner with a small K&N type. (I'd like to clean up the engine compartment), would any of these help performance or mpg's. If I can, is there a site that shows what can be removed safely.
Thanks, G.

I guess it would depend on where you live and whether or not you want to register it

Federal law states that you should leave that stuff there. If your smart you will do that and save yourself many headaches in the future. As far as a "site" I really doubt that anyone would compromise themself by posting such info.

the big question is where do you live? do they do visual smog inspections?
but to answer your question, do a search on the nutter bypass, this will take the ECM out of the loop and you will be able to rid yourself of most of the vacuum lines. if you really want to dump the problematic emissions system, consider going to an aftermarket carb like the weber and a HEI ignition.
and to those worrying about changing things, the jeep will still pass emissions as long as its not visual.

They've got no checks of any kind where we live.

it all depends on who your friends are I live in new york and have no problems passing my saftey/emmisions inspection the only thing I left on my YJ was a gutted cat after I did the MC2100 carb swap.

If no one is looking over your shoulder, sure, ditch that smog pump. It was a bad idea at the time, and only gets worse with age. You need to plug up everything connected to the pump. If I remember right, it takes 2-3 HP to drive that sucker, so you should pick that back up.

What are you refering to as the "smog pump" ? I still have a few left over issues from my MC conversion... just curious.
