I just swapped in a auto into my 89 YJ 2.5L. Started fine and ran well. Was backing it out of the garage and it died. No sputter, just shut off. Found a blown fuel pump fuse.

Replaced the fuse and now with the key in the on position the fuel pump kicks on to prime but doesnt shut off. I can crank the motor but it wont start.

Im supposed to be at raush creek in 6 hours so any help would be great.

Chris

It kind of sounds electrical. Did you replace the fuse with the same one or a higher amperage one? Are you getting any fuel pressure to the rail, filter or regulator or is it just pumping air?

At 12:30 in the morning, with a deadline, a flashlight and wrench would be better in your hands than a keyboard. I hope it's all fixed by now and you are on your way. Have fun at Rausch. Don

this is prob. too late to help... but there's also a little 15amp ingnition. fuse in the main board... and IIRC, it also ties in with the fuel pump circuit, and if its blown, you'll just crank and crank and crank. I went throuth this same trouble... and just for the record, I know squat about electrical, but this is what the electrical shop diagnosed on my junk. rewired the short, new fuse, been good ever since. :wavin2:

well, stayed up most of the night, couldnt get it to start back up. The weird thing is, when I backed it down the driveway it ran fine. Had it running in the garage for 30 minutes so I could finish filling the trans with fluid.

As soon as I got near the trailer I put it in drive and it died. I just cant understand why the fuel pump is running constantly. It wont stop its priming stage.

Tried replacing the relay, making sure it had gas, readjusting the cps, and checking all my connections. Seems that its not getting spark from the coil either.

Does this shed anymore light?

to add...

my prob. ended up being the backup light circuit wire. it runs along the pass. side of the tranny/TC. that's where my short was. I was told that circuit tied in to that ingnition fuse and the fuel pump. did U check that fuse?

I checked and rechecked all of the fuses, connections, and wires. Everything was good.

I replaced the ICM, coil, and fuel pump relay. Nothing changed, still no spark off of the coil. Key in the on position still causes the fuel pump to cycle on to prime, but not shut off.

I went through all of the diagnostics in the FSM and everything checked out correct.

I am going to change the cps and see if that works.

I am at a loss.

Thanks for all the help worm.

replaced the cps, distributor cap, and rotor just for good measure.

I still dont have any spark out of the coil.

Anyone have any ideas?

How about the shutoff relay. It gets paid to make sure the engine doesn't burn down by pumping fuel all over if things are not right, and your pump just runs. That, or the ECM itself, which is the thing making the decisions.

Are you getting voltage into the coil?

I dont believe that the 89 has the auto shutdown. At least not according to the FSM wiring diagram. If I am wrong, where is the auto shutdown relay? Now you have me thinking that everything that is going on is common with the auto shut down.

Are you getting voltage into the coil?

Yes I am getting all the right values to the ICM and the coil according to the diagnostics that the FSM had me do.
