my last post on here was asking about changing the throttle body gasket. because i could smell gas really bad at highway speeds. background; jeep is driven roughly 60-70 miles a day, up and over the mountain and back again. it does this with no problem. until im 1 mile from home on a steep hill going up, it dies. it doesnt sputter, cough, nothing. just dead. it happened wednesday, thought it was out of gas ( gas gauge doesnt work) but it wasnt. half an hour later it fired right up.
thursday, drove my usual route for work. got at the exact same place, and it died again! so now im listening for the fuel pump again, nothing. i didnt hear it the day before either. so i went and got a new fuel pump relay. thinking maybe it was shorting out. but which one is it? they are 2 side by side and identical. so i played the swap them out game. no luck. so i had it towed the whole whopping 1 mile home.:banghead:
it now is sitting in all of its unmoving glory in the driveway.
im guessing the fuel pump is shot. even though its got less than 500 miles on it. could that be why i smelled gas? 90yj 2.5

I would change the fuel filter first. Then check the fuel pressure. It could be the regulator. I'm not sure where that is on a TBI setup though. Could be a bad cat, but that is less likely, usually just makes a power loss on hills.

im sure its not the cat, its pulls up and over the mountain about 60 mph. that and its been gutted. all i know is it isnt getting fuel. the fuel pumps not working at all.

The pump uses +12 and gnd. Just to make sure the problem is at the back of the truck and not the front, you could energize it's input line without all the rest of the Shutoff Relay and ECM and such getting in the way.

mabey... just drive real real real fast the last 5 miles and when it dies 1mile from home you can coast.

just a thought.

Lock-up a bicycle ~1 mile from your home & start cycling the rest of the way up and back. :dunce:

Do you have an anti-theft device, or was one recently installed?

the links above show the relays that i'm talking about. there are two, the one that i'm pointing at is the new replacement, which is identical to the other ones. do i need to replace both of them? is there another fuse/relay that i should be looking for? if it's not the fuel pump relay what is it?

I'd check the installation on the fuel pump. It sounds like it's losing the ground on the pump, so that on hills the wire moves and the pump shuts off. A loose connector or broken wire could cause this. Given that you're smelling gas, it could also be that the fuel pump locking ring is either loose or broken, and gas is splashing out of the tank around it. You said the pump is ~500 miles old, that makes me suspicious of it's installation.

I'd get a look at that pump and test the wires at the connector for power. Hook up a test light and have a buddy turn on the ignition. That will tell you if the problem is at the pump or further forward.

ok, heres whats been done. pulled the tank and pump, checked the pump off the battery and it purrs like a kitten. so then i went and started checking all of the fuses, they are good. checked the wiring from the tank to the under dash fuse box and nothing. but my dome light still works. is there an inline fuse somewhere that im not seeing?

Based upon all your work, I'm starting to think either ECM or a sensor, like TPS or CPS, that might make the ECM shut down the motor.

if i put a small amount of gas in the t.b. it will run. im at a loss. i know its something simple, but what?!

It's not too safe, but you could run a +12 to the fuel pump, with a hand held switch to the wire, or get the +12 from an on-with-ign source, and then try to start it. That way you know all is well except for fuel power.

this is the picture of the only ground wire to the emergency brake that supposedly goes to the fuel pump?

these are the vent lines. where do they attach to? checked the evaporator canister there are no lines, believe it is bypassed?

this is the mystery part. the rubber end was dry rotted off not sure if this is the line that the gas vent line is to be hooked to or is this part of the rear windshield wiper fluid linkage?

The gas vent line from the tank plugs into the bottom of the connector in the last pic. Yours is rotted and needs replacing. P/N: 5300 4047 CONNECTOR.

Not sure on the other vent lines, but the hose clamps look like factory crimp-ons. I haven't had my tank down yet, so I'm not sure on the proper routing.
