This question is for the AMC V8 guys...

I've got a newly rebuilt 360 in a Grand Wagoneer (I know, it's not a CJ). Everything is new. The motor has 8k on it. The entire exhaust is new, the carb is new, the distributor is new, the wires... you get the picture.

It runs like a champ after warming up for 5 minutes - it'll smoke the tires (if you turn a little) Once it gets fully warmed up, it sounds like a jar full of marbles... towing is muuuuch worse.

The timing has been checked, the vac' lines are all new, the EGR is new, It's running 93 octane... it still pings!

Anyone dealt with this... successfully?

Thanks,
V8

Retard the timing about 2 degrees. If that doesn't fix it, retard it another degree or two until it stops.

How is it ideling / running other wise? Any other symptoms? Did you change anything eles during the rebuild? Did or does it have EGR?

Just trying to get a little more to go on.

I'd be looking at the EGR myself. Is the EGR vacuum hose running through the temp switch thing? Is it possible that it is in the wrong port? One port opens at temp, the other closes. Silly to ask if the vacuum advance on the dist got routed through that.

Thanks... I'll look deeper into the EGR area (?).

It's really frustrating. The thing idles great, gets reasonable mpg (13 highway), jumps off the line (when cold... bogs when warm)

Thanks again.
