Working on getting tools and info to regear my D30. For all you that have regeared, how did you remove the side carrier bearings?

Harbor Freight sells a cheap bearing remover. They'll work a couple of times but aren't a great tool. If you plan to remove a lot of bearings, Randy's sells a really trick tool.

No matter what, you're going to need a press to get them off. That, or you could cut them off. I've done that before. It's messy and a pain but it works.

You need a press to install them, never used a press to remove them. Most knife style bearing pullers are threaded for a normal 2 legged puller frame.

well i have never had much luck with normal jaw pullers, the only puller i have been able to use is a posi lock 3 jaw puller, but even then i wasnt able to save the bearing.

Your old bearing body minus the rollers and cage welded to a piece of pipe combined with a large hammer makes a great press for reinstalling new bearings.

For my regear I didn't need to remove any side bearings.

I have a press, but i can't see how you remove them with it. Unless I drilled 2 holes on the bottom of the cross beam of the press (the middle beam of the H), used some grade 8 bolts to bolt the bearing splitter to the cross beam and pressed the carrier while the bearing was held by the splitter.

You need to elevate the puller and suspend the differential from the puller, then, you press the differential out of the bearings. The HF puller sort of clamps behind the bearing, between the bearing and the differential.

In this pic, instead of using a harmonic balancer to push the carrier out of the bearing, use a press.
