Is the roll bar configuration in the early YJ safe compared to the family style for those sitting in the back seat in a rollover situation? Also, what are the alternative other than changing the roll bar to improve saftey? Are there alternatives to the lap seatbelt with this roll bar? Thanks.

The early roll bar design is not intended to be used for rear passenger safety. The supports in the rear just keep the main hoop upright. It only provides protection for the front passengers. Since the family style roll cage just bolts to the body, you should be able to just bolt one in. If you're concerned at all about rolling with passengers, you should definitely use something beefier than factory. Preferrably a fully welded and gusseted 6 point or higher cage that is tied to the frame. You can usually roll on those things and keep on using it. You'd most likely have to replace a factory roll cage if it took the full weight of the vehicle. There are no shoulder belt options without upright supports in the back.

Thanks for the reply. I was more concerned in very light use rather than in a situations that were more extreme.

I just upgraded from the family style cage to the full weld cage by Poison Spyder. The Poison Spyder is significantly better in all respects compared to the factory.

 not putting your family in dangerous situations in the first place would make for a better solution :zdunce:

I happen to think that the 87-92, earlier style, cage is stronger. The tube diameters seem to be bigger, more of a cj style. I tipped mine onto its roof and had no bends or cracks in mine. Its an 87, and seems very strong. Def. not as strong as an aftermarket or custom, but for my uses I like it.

Hate to hijack but can I get some info. on the cage you installed? In particular how much headroom is there in the back seat area and were the cuts and copes correct? If you have some pics. I'd love to see them as well!

Thanks!
