Techinques for preventing "rocker rot" 101

I've invested in a set of diamond plate rocker covers to "FIX" a pre existing rust spot. Of course the rusty aera will be treated to prevent further deteoriation. But other than SILLYcone caulk or undercoating what other methods have you employed to seal out water and muck from getting in between the body and guards?

It's going to get in anyway... no matter what you do. Just give it a way out and you'll be fine.
