Honestly its reassuring to know how well Jeeps are rated in crash tests, might get ****ty gas mileage and break down but damn that Commander held up pretty well.

Could be true. Ever see a head-on accident at only 25mph? Pretty devastating.

I hit a small tree at about 20mph in an 01 TJ on the passanger front side. Tore the whole underside out of the front of it, front end, hood, and even cracked the windshield. $7,000 damage to a car that booked for under 13,000. When you hit an object that has no give, it will completely destroy your car, I don't care what your driving.

Thats because in a head on accident the other car is usually going about the same speed so it'd be like hitting a brick wall ~50 mph.
I think that Commander was going faster than 25 mph. I was in a 6 car pile up in the XJ and I hit a car going 25-30 mph at impact. It came out a lot better than that Commander did. It still drove okay after the accident other than the airbag deployment, a slight radiator leak, and the allignment being out. I cut the airbag out and drove it home. After getting the front end alligned (w/o any issues) and putting a new radiator in it, it drove just like it did before the accident. It just looked like chit.

i say he hit it at 40mph...did you see the damage of my jeep from about 60mph into a guardrail? granted i was sliding sideways, but thats no 25mph hit. he msut have done something weird, the back tire is popped and the rim is bent in multiple spots.

Glad someone mentioned it...
He was going quite a bit faster than 25. The rear wheel says it all.

its hard to judge impact speed with an solid object versus another car. Granted two cars moving adds to the speed, but cars dissapate alot of the energy during the crumpling process and are also designed to crumple differently. All of the Commanders energy was kept in the vehicle as long as the pole didn't break. If you hit another car goin 25 it will look and feel different that hitting a "brick wall" at 25, especially if the other car is stationary. and ATL, didn't you hit a stopped car? that would cause less damage than a telephone pole.

It wasn't stopped, it was in the process of running underneath a Silverado, but yes I see your point. The Acura's crumple zone did absorb some of the impact. It came out A LOT worse than the Heep did.

Exactly. You hit another car, his car crumples as does yours. That absorbs some of the energy, so the damage won't be as severe as hitting an object with NO GIVE.
(If that car's coming at you head-on at the same speed, and it weighs about the same as yours, it's not going to be much worse or better than hitting a concrete barricade that is stationary but has no give. His front-end sheetmetal gives, as does yours.)
Hitting a pole or tree is harder on a vehicle, also, than hitting a wall or barricade. Instead of spreading the force of impact evenly along the chassis, it takes it all at one point, and that point gives in...the wraparound effect.
I'd say - from having hit firm objects and cars in corners - that 25-30 mph was about right.

Actually that one was broadsided by a Wrangler. The Wrangler must have been flying because it tipped the Commander on it's side and then the Commander slid roof-first into the pole.

i love them.
its like a big new version of the xj cherokee with a big ol v8.
any vehicle would have suffered pretty much the same fate as the commander, let alone the occupant
