Hey Gang,

Just did an oil change in a new-to-me Jeep Islander, with 4.2L engine....it took considerably less oil than I expected....and less than I expected came out.....did change w/filter and only used about 4qt to refill to full...checked several times, before/after driving, hot/cold, etc....but it is full...with only 4qt???

Heck, my little 4-banger toyota takes more oil than that!

Is there something going on I don't know?

Just curious....

Odd....should be 6 quarts.

Yup, thats what I thought....I drained it for about half and hour with cap off the valve cover and filter removed....only put in just under 4qt and it is at the full line....

Drove it, let it set, still full...with <4qts!!

You may want to see if you got the right dip stick?

That was my first thought, but it is the right dipstick....

Not trying to be a smart ass, but how do you know? IIRC there is nothing special stamped on my 258 dipstick to set it apart from another one.

Leadfoot,

Thats a good question....I compared it to a fellow YJ on the next block over from me.....they are the same dipstick...

It is not just a dipstick issue....

When I drained the oil, it was only about 1.5" of oil in the bottom of my catch pan....which is about 4qts....I have been changing oil in all my vehicles for many years....many, many years....when I looked into the catch pan, I thought 'where is all the oil'....???

Let it ooze for half hour, re-plugged the pan, put on a new filter put in 3qts, and on a whim checked the dipstick, it was at the bottom of the range, another 3/4th quart brought it to full.....

I know....WTF???

Maybe someone put a brick i the pan to conserve oil, like the way people used to do on toilet tanks. :loopyeye:

When the pan is empty, rap on it and see if it sounds right?? Could you possibly have that much sludge?
