was wondering about this since i have been hearing bout it lately..... how is it possible to get a xj front driveshaft in to the rear of a yj??? also what are the advantages and dis-advantages??? and do you have to use a SYE with it since its a CV shaft ?? were would you go to get it cut down to size, and balanced?? is it cheaper then buying a CV shaft and SYE if needed.... all info on this would be great.....

Any driveline shop should be able to cut and rebalance a shaft for you. I had mine done for $75 or 100 CDN, so yes it is WAY cheaper than getting a new CV DS built.

Yes you need a SYE as the XJ shaft is double cardin. The XJ shaft has 1310 joints at both ends so as long as your SYE yoke and pinion yoke do as well, you are golden.

Yes, U will need an SYE, a good mod to have anyway. :beach:

someone posted in an earylier thread that the XJ units are not rebuildable, if thats so, then have the shop double check to make sure its a good CV.

hmmmm... well then maybe i will wait till i get my 4" or 4.5" lift kit.... instead of buying the SYE and a cv shaft then end up replacing the shaft later down the road.. more money out the window for nothing LOL

I've built many of these as trail spares for people, and even run one on my Jeep every day that didn't take any balancing after it was done. NEVER seen a non-rebuildable CV

Im running a shortened XJ shaft in the back of mine. Zero problems in 1 and half years. Off and on road. $80 total in the whole thing.

If you have a 94/95 yj you will need the conversion joint for the back. 1310 to 1330... found that out the hard way...

no i got a 89 yj :) im thinking i might wait till i get my 4" or 4.5" lift before getting a SYE and cv shaft OR a shortened xj shaft, since i need a SYE to run the xj shaft anyway i will wait i think, then i dont have to buy 2 different shafts and hopefully save a bit of cash that way....then i can buy the axles before the lift, then the lift and then jam em all in together and then get a SYE and proper length shaft for the rear....i know sounds like a long time to wait.... but hopefully have the axles by end of next summer and lift by next winter maybe..... depending of how much i get back for income tax.......would i be ok to run a 4" or 4.5" suspension lift with 1.25" shackles on my yj without going through joints every other day?? thats if i dont get the SYE and shaft right away after the lift....

For anyone who might read this now or later, the front shaft out of some Ford Explorers make great donors as well. They have the same size CV and same size pinion joint on the other end as the XJ shafts.
