I have a 1987 YJ. It has been not starting lately the starter fires up but it is not turning over. I have pulled the starter off and had it tested,it is fine. I took a look at the fly wheel and the ring gears sre a bit worn in places but not what I would think would cause it to not start. anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Clean all electrical connections - pos, neg battery cable, stater solienoid connections, everything. Sounds like your bendix is not coming out, which is a sign of a bad starter, even though it may have bench tested OK. If that doesn't do it, replace the stater solienoid.

I also have an 87 YJ. and my starter dragged so i got a new one.. then i realized the reason it wouldn't start was because my carb was missing the choke plate.. ( i didn't expect that ) but that was my prob

So what your saying is the starter motor is working but it is not engaging the flywheel and turning the engine over? If that is the case and you don't hear any grinding then it is the starter solienoid is bad. If it is grinding then the starter gear or flywheel may be worn.
Good luck.

yeah the solienoid seperate from the starter so I will check that cause the nut was loose and there was some arc damage to the nut. but, previous owner has replace the carb with injection so i dont think it is that. tomorrow me and my buddy are replacing the ring gear. so I will let you all know what the verdict is. Thanks for the help.

Why would you replace the ring gear if the starter solenoid had arc damage to it? Seems like wasted effort to me to drop the tranny if you don't have to!

well my boy seems to think there is enough wear to the ring gear that it needs to be replaced. and the arc damage is not on the soleniod itself but on the nut. and the grinding you mentioned it does gring when trying to start.
