you didn't mention if you did anything to the fuel system like drain the tank of any old junk fuel, fuel filter, etc. If it fires with gas directly in the carb then your prob is in the fuel delivery. Try this. Take the fuel line from the tank off at the pump, place a way to catch the fuel (plastic soda bottle will slip right over) and apply a little air to the tank like with a air nozzle. Not much just a little. Just to see of gas comes that far. If it does take a smell and see if it has any order like varnish. IF varnish smell, flush entire fuel system. IF you have gas and no oder, reconnect that line and now take off the one at the carb. Again place something to catch gas. Have someone crank while you watch for fuel. Got fuel? Then carb needs looked atprobably rebuilt. No fuel then fuel pump. Just a reminder to please be careful about catching the fuel and not starting a fire!!

sorry i didnt mention it. dropped the tank and etched it then relined it. put in new fuel pump and gas filter. heres what i just did. i turned the key over till i heard the fuel pump kick on. i repeated this 4 or 5 times. then tried to start it. it fired up and ran for 30-45 seconds. i put app. 2 gallons of gas in tank. but the new pump and sending unit is longer than the old one. it seems like its not reaching the fuel.

Be sure you have enough gas to get to the pick up. Forgot about the fuel injection on the 4cyl. That adds some diagnostic hassle. Fuel pressure regulator, TBI, etc. Then there is the additional interaction in the ignition system for run and start modes. When it comes to the fuel injection, out of my league. Sorry.
