What's up guys... i've been trolling around old posts for about a week now and while i've found some great advice, i'm still not sure how i should proceed.

here's what i got... it's a bone stock 92 2.5/manual in decent shape, some rot, some rust, but she runs decent for the most part. I've done the basics (fuel filter, air filter, cleaned out CCV, checked plugs) and that's pretty much it as i haven't had all that much time to play with it yet. It's got 120K on the clock.

Problem is, thing idles kind of rough. not terrible rough, but rough enough that i know i should be able to get a multi point to run better.

I checked the TPS last night by pulling the plug and i got 4.9V on one terminal and .004 on the other (using the center port as a ground). I checked the engine codes, and i did have a "24" which is "TPS over 4.96v", but after resetting the ecm (pulling neg. terminal for 10+ minutes) it hasn't come back.

Where should i be starting? i'm going to check the timing tonight to see if it's in the ballpark, but other then that what should i be looking at? Does that stepper motor thing need to pulled and cleaned often?

any help is much appreciated, even if all you recommend is 'go run a search on "XXX" newbie', i've been a member for other forums for many years so i know how that works... i'm just at a loss right now after a very long week so figured i'd just come right out and ask.

thanks in advance and looking forward to getting to know you all, you guys got a hell of a quality forum going here.

and no... I'm just looking to drive it around for the time being, the mods will come with the cool weather and the paychecks from now till then.

maybe search IAC (idle air controller). Do yourself a favor and fix everything and bring all maintenance specs up to date before you start modding. Nothing sucks worse than having big bucks in a rig that won't run right.

edit: welcome to the board :tirehead:

That's pretty much what i'm going for... get the machine running like it should be stock and then figure out exactly what i want to do with it.

I'll pop off the iac and clean that out tonight, but i still feel like there's something else going on.

Something else beyond the hole in the floor, near-dead clutch and borderline bald tires that is...

Look for cracked, dry rotted vac lines too.

Good point... this was actually something i did think about, but forgot to do as a friend has created a little jury rigged smoke machine to help find leaks, but it's a two man operation as it stands.

Long story short, it's a PVC pipe casing with a sodering iron submerged in a small jar of motor oil... some tubes to feed smoke into a vacuum line and a feed for small puffs from the compressor. slowly push some smoke into any vacuum line you can find and look for leaks.

It's helped on a bunch of other cars already... grand idea, bad implementation as it stands, but we're working on a better design.

New o2 sensor? Clean the throttle body?

Turns out after changing the TPS ($35 from pep boys mind you), this thing now runs like a raped ape.

Couldn't be happier with the motor. Unfortunetly, now i'm noticing all the other things wrong with it so i've got my work cut out for me... but i'll save that for other posts.

Thanks for the help guys

You get bonus points for actually responding to one of these "won't run" posts with the final resolution/fix:pirate: Nice work
