I have a 91yj with the 5spd tranny (ax-15 ). When it's in 2nd gear and I let off the gas slightly it slips out of gear. On power 2nd gear works fine and I can shift to 3rd and back to 1st. If I hold the shifter down it will stay in 2nd gear. Any ideas what this could be? I haven't been able to look inside it but the guy I bought the jeep from said all I had to do was pull the shifter boot off and replace some part which I can't remember at the moment.
I've never done any real tranny work so I'd appreciate any help or links to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Does the Jeep have a body lift or a transfercase lowering kit installed?
If so the shifter and boot may be hittting the back edge of the floor pan.
You may have to trim the floor pan a bit and relocate the shift boot back a bit to prevent the problem.
A common issue with body lifts and transfer case drops
my ax15 did the same.... it was toast. had to have it rebuilt. new gear, synchros, bearing kit etc. but if it goes that way look used you'll save over a rebuild if you do it yourself.

Sounds like you killed the synchros. Rebuild or try to find a used one for $250-300.http://www.car-part.com/

No t-case drop. the jeep is stock.
wank, those are not very encouraging words :banghead: lol... I don't think the tranny is in that bad of shape aside from this one problem. Like I said it shifts fine in all the other gears up or down. It's ONLY when I let off the gas in 2nd gear that it slips out of gear.
I got a response from another board that said it could be the shift fork. Any ideas about this?
Thanks for the replies guys. Keep em comin...

What's involved in changing out a synchro? Or is it the kind of thing a professional tranny shop needs to do? I don't mind doing some work since this isn't my daily driver.
Thanks for the link. I'll look into that as well.

Changing out your synchros require dropping the tranny and tearing it apart. It's not a novice job but it's not impossible for a novice to do it with the right tools and frame of mind
it was second gear in mine also.. seems to be a roblem gear in the ax15's.. getting the tranny out is fairly straight forward. do a search on the tranny it's easy to find info and diagrams. if not comfortable just take it out yourself and bring it somewhere it'll save you a couple hundred in labor charges at least...
