ok, this is just a feeler...i am sick of my 4 banger engine, i was curious exactly what has to be swapped in when putting in a 4.0L....engine (obviously), transmission (ax-15), transfer case?, new gears for axles? this would be somethign of a summer project and definetly a learning experience

see, i know my dad may be willing to do this because A) he gets to buy new tools B) he gets to help put it in and stuff

i know he has the mechanical know how, just wanted your ideas on what has to be changed when swapping a 4.0L into a 94 YJ

thanks

tranny, tcase. Axles are ok. you'll have 4.11s or 3.73s stock in a 4banger which is good. You'll have to splice in the extra lines for the extra injectors, which isn't too bad. You'll need a new or reprogramed computer.

A much easier thing would be maybe trying to turbo it with junkyard parts. If you blow it, who cares you wana swap it anyway. There's lots of different turbos and superchargers in junk cars. just depends which you want

I always wanted to replace my 2.5L with a 4.0L, I ended up buying a 1995 4.0L with a jeep attached to it. :dunce:

motor mounts need to be cut off and new ones welded in

Ignore most of this post. Sorry to be so blunt. Lots of bad info here.

Tranny/tcase combo will not work with the 4.0. No 4 cylinders came with 3.73s.

I doubt you could simply "splice n the extra lines for injectors" and you will absolutely need the 4.0 computer AND harness.

JY turbo or supercharger??? :kooky:

i know they are 4.11 gears since there is a little metal tag on the back differential that says it

yeah i agree, tranny prolly wont work, tcase should. but as for splicing in wire for injectors, i have never heard of that, u would need the full wire harness and comp that was with the 4.0.
the turbo idea just sounds silly

Hello,

I believe YJ4Life was simply answering the question:

"What needs to be swapped?"

He answered:

"Tranny and t case."

We all agree on that. THEN he said the axles should be ok, which we also agree with.

For a good site with lots of information on swaps etc, go to:

Good luck,

Rod,
You are probably correct. Re-reading his post after reading yours, I agree that is what he was saying. His incorrect statement of 3.73 gears in a 4-cylinder plus the strange advice to splice in connectors to the wire harness certainly through me for a loop.

Tough91YJ,
The input shaft on the t-case (21 spline) would have to be changed if you went with an AX-15 tranny (23 spline).

ok makes since to me now also, and thats what i was thinking on the spline count on the tcase. just was not sure, why does it have to be soo complicated? :spinz:

he asked what needed to be swapped. I said tranny and t-case, then a period, then said the axles were ok. as for the 3.73's. www.car-parts.com have them listed however its not engine specific. As for the harness I've got chiltons manuals for YJ, XJ, and ZJ and compared all the wiring diagrams I've also traced every pin for the 4cyl to 6 banger swap however never got to it. if the guagues of wire are the same between the different engines, I can't say but the wirings are very similar from 4 to 6 to 8 by Chrysler

It's actually pretty easy. And the tranny and tcase from any cherokee will work just fine. Wiring is pretty straight forward.

i went the easy round and bought a jeep that had been rolled and just swapped the bodies.

Don't forget about the wiring harness. You will need one specifically for that year and type of engine. Sorry if this is obvious, but that would really suck to get the new motor in and realize it then. Get ready to spend some $$$ (unless it is a 95. I have one)

I'm glad you said something. ^He's got it as accurate as I think it gets.
