Time to adjust the valves, as they are clattering a little too much for my taste. Fact is, I have not even opened the valve cover, so not sure the valves can by easily adjusted.

First Step: I searched the YJ site, but did not find any posting on valve adjustment.

Second step: Ask for information from you guys.

If I don't hear anything, I will still pull the valve cover and take a quick look, as I am sure I can adjust the rockers somehow, just hope it's not the Ford method of different size pushrods. Yuk.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Rick

I've never head of anyone adjusting the valves on a 4.0L. If you figure out how, post up.

I think that applies to all hydraulic lifters. No adjustments. VW's, which were solid lifters, had to be adjusted. :teehee: Corvairs too, :ahhh: but they might have needed adjustments because they were horizontal.

I have a 1993 4.0.

Actually, I am wondering if the rocker arms can be adjusted similar to the small block chevy. These also have hydrolic lifters, but with adjustable rockers. might just have to pull the valve cover to find out.

I thought so but I didn't want to start talking out my butt since I don't know that much about internals of motors. Just not one of my strong points.

No AMC motors since 1971 have adjustable valvetrain. This includes V8's, I6's, and I4's. They all use bridged pedistal rockers with bolts, not studs. Valve install height, shims under the rockers, and pushrod length are the common means to adjust AMC valvetrain. They can be converted to adjustable, however, by machining down, drilling, taping the boss and installing studs.
