I'd like to swap gears and have access to a large selection of XJ parts. How much of a swap is this?

If it's an HP D30 the gears will swap to a YJ. If it's a LP D30 they'll swap to a TJ. Older XJ's were HP.

XJ's had 3 different rear axles stock. Either a D44, D35, or a Chrycho 8.25. If you find one with a D35, the gears will swap into your Wrangler.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but, have you ever set up gears before? If not, the tools to do it can get a little pricey and you're going to need to also buy master install kits for the gears. If you're at 3.07's now, you're also going to need to pull the front carrier from the XJ if you go any lower in the front and both if you go lower than 3.55's in the rear. I don't know that XJ's ever came with anything lower than a 3.73. For that little gain, I wouldn't even mess with resetting gears. 3.73's are marginal on 33's and any bigger tire and you're going to want to go to lower gears.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. No, I have never done a rear end (probably never will either :D ).

I don't know what gears are in it yet. The way it feels, I'm thinking the 3.07's. It is a dog compared to my last jeep (same motor, trans, and tires). I would like to go to the 4.10's and I'm trying to figure out what is going to be my best option. Like I said, I have a supply of a lot of XJ parts available.

the only problem with the XJ front is that it has coils on it instead of leafs. but the 35 is interchangable and I think that the 8.25 needs some driveshaft help to work

You would be better off to put the whole XJ axel under your jeep vs swapping parts. I'm not sure about gear ratio's for XJ's, but I think 4.10 may be hard to find. Also don't waste your time or money on regearing a D35.

4.10 are avail but like he said they are hard to find, but they were usually in 96 or older manual 4-bangers
