There is a nasty grindy sound that comes from my steering columb in my 95 yj when I'm turning the wheel fast. :ugh2: It seems to make the most noise when steering left. It sounds like it might be a berring but it sounds almost like it could possibly be air bubbles in the steering juice... but that might only be a coincidence. The u-joint at the bottom of the shaft has a bit of play, but I can't hear any noise coming from there and the steering is relativlely tight. :clapping: My chiltons manual doesn't mention anything about steering columb berrings... but i'm sure DC must have put some in there.

Has anyone had to deal with anything like this before? Where can I find the parts and how much? Also, is it possible to find just the u-joint for the steering shaft witout replacing the whole shaft? I'm cheep you see... :pablo:

Well, if you want to remove the air bubbles from your "steering juice", you take off the cap for the power steering unit, and turn the wheels lock to lock 5 times. That will bleed any air out of your steering juice lines. If the ujoint is bad in the shaft, thats probably it. Needle bearings are probably dust, and there is no way to just replace the u joint. Have to replace the whole shaft.

I'm having same problem, What could be the cause? It's just one thing after another. New CPS to stop the not-starting problem. Could my steering go out? I commute bout 25 miles everyday and also work 5 miles in the other direction.

There are 2 bearings in the column that are encased in a plastic sleeve. They are the same as the GM column. It is quite a job to replace them, but can be done by the average guy if you have some mechanical knowledge. I would search for a write-up on this if you plan to do it yourself because there are a couple of locking pins that are hard to find if you are not looking for them. The GM part number for the kit is 7844651 and includes both bearings, rack asm, and a new sector gear. This may not be your noise, but if it is, that is how to fix it!

My steering was making funky noises at one point, I did this procedure and it went away. Hope its something easy :)
