Do you mean taking the stock axles and flipping them so the pinion is higher?
For one thing - they will run backwards. Another is the pinion may not get the proper oiling (high pinion axles have an oiling channel and are designed to run "upside down".) It would require lots of custom work and it would be better to find the correct axle to retrofit instead. That's my take.
Sorry if you meant something else...

Pro's:
Easier to work on
Con's:
Loss of normal traction
:gassyme:
I'm fairly new to jeeps. I bought a 94 yj about a year ago. It has 35" tires
soa, posi-rearend. I was looking at going posi-front so I pulled the cover off to see what the front differential was and found it to be a dana 44 with
456 gears. Got a buddy to come look and he realized front and back differentials are up side down. Jeep runs fantastic. I was just curious
to learn a little information. Thanks
Joe what do you mean by loss of traction.

No cons! You gain 5 reverse speeds. How cool is that?

I was being a smart a$$. :beerchug: :bangtard:
In all honesty, sometime I'd rather just post my cell phone number so I could talk directly with people & clear things up - especially on my end..... :) :hoos:
What I mean by that is - the information given in the thread is somewhat hard for me to understand, & hard to give good feedback to, since interpretation of your questions is a factor for me.

At least ya have D44's. Maybe U could post some pics so we could get a look. Could be like Jeep4x4nut said, HP D44. That'd be cool.
oh yeah... :welcome:

I can't tell when u guys are pulling my chain or being serious. I guess after being on here a while I will get the inside jokes. Seriously, I can use any advise you can give me. I have been trying to insert my pictures (attachments) but it says they are uploading and then there is nothing there. Can you help me figure out how to get them to post? Thanks!

Not everyone has it, just those of us who have wheeled with him or are neighbors. :D
you probably have high pinion axles from the sound of your description. I highly doubt they were flipped.
And do you have a limited slip or a locker in your rear axle? Posi is an old brand name, not an actual term for a traction aiding device

JU won't allow you to attach pics. You'll need a secondary host for that.
Whats a secondary host? Yes I have some type of of full locker in the rear but not sure yet what it is.
Can anyone tell me how to find out what type of differentials I have.
I would like to put a locker in front but not for sure what the best way to go,any advise.

email Joe the pictures, He LOVES to post pictures.
in the mean time.
if you were looking at the axle, is the pinion (part ds connects to) above or below the center line of the center sections of the diffs.
EDIT -- Joe how come I dont have your number now I feel left out :weepy:
The pinion is above the center line.

I use http://Fototime.com to host my pics. Your pics need to be hosted on the internet somewhere before they can be posted - if you use a service like I do.
PM me the .jpg files & I'll download them to my Fototime account & post them for you.
Once hosted, it's a very simple process of a few keystrokes. :)

if the pinion is above the center line they are high pinion axles. for the locker, is there any kind of line running into the rear diff from someplace else? either a blue plastic hose or maybe a braided cable that goes into the center section? If theres a blue hose, congrats, you have an ARB Air Locker, if theres a cable running into your diff, you likely have an OX locker. if not, you either have a detroit Locker, or a lunchbox loxker of some kind (Detroit EZ Locker, Aussie Locker, Lockright, etc)
Thanks for PMing me your new # Joe (ha ha), seriously thanks for all of your in put and help. I think I have figured out that I have a high pinon axle. Most of the jeeps in our club are CJ's and these guys have never worked on anything like I've got. They are stumped but I know that it is all good!
My jeep runs great and drives great. I just want to learn all I can. Keep posting and I will keep reading!

Without reading through the entire thread......so, do you have a HPD44 rear, HPD44 front, both, or......factory front HPD30 & HPD44 rear? Which combo is it? :)
I have a HPD44 with 456 gears in the front.
I haven't figured out what the rear is yet, is the D44 only on a certain vehicle? I am trying to figure out what my differentials are off of.

Naw, the D44's came on LOTS of vehicals other than Jeeps.
However, low pinion D44 seem to be the norm.
Here's a couple links that might help to figure out which axle you have in the rear. Granted, there are lots of others besides what these links show - but this is something to look at.

Thanks a million Joe.
I pulled up those sights and believe it matched up with a dana 70.
I replaced the brake shoes on the rear awhile back and it matched up with a dodge and a few others.
It was hard to find shoes because it had an odd size drum, something
like 91/4".
You guys have been a big help. Thanks again.. :bouncez:
