Its been awhile but i'm getting back into the jeep thing. I used to be on the list as md4wheelin six or so years ago. I really missed all the good times with my xj and cj. I used to be called the u boat commander by some people on the list for always driving through puddles in my xj that were up almost to my windshield. But anyway after putting my 70 cj 5 with 38s in storage (back yard) for the last three years i've decided to pull her back out and re do her. I want to pull the motor which is a built up 304 that has no problems smoking the tires in 4wd. I think thats the number for the small jeep v8. like I said its been a couple of years since I did the four wheelin thing. Anyway I want to put that 304 in a wrangler and build up the wrangler for mud and mild rocks. (more mud then rocks) I know you can't just throw the motor in and that i'll have to redo the entire drive train and so forth. So my question is, is there a better year yj to buy for this or are they all pretty much the same because of having to basicly start from scratch off the frame. Ive found some real cheap ones from the late 80's for a thousand or so. I'm guessing that people are getting rid of them cheap because of the transmisions and stuff falling apart. which is fine with me because i'll have to replace all that anyway. I just wondering if the frame and body will work for this type of build up. Also i'm positive this has been done before so if anyone know a web site to direct me to off the top of their head i would appreciate it.

thanks
Joe

If your gona do a complete build up, then the only major difference in years would be the roll cage. '92 and up have the full bars in back. The frame should not be an issue.

Older the frame....more chances for frame rot. Just make sure its good before you buy it!

Besides the frame being in good shape like mentioned, I'd be looking for a YJ that has power steering too, which some of them do not. You might be able to use some of the factory PS stuff on your project.
