What is this dumb box that has a lever on it but doesn't seem to have any remote way of controlling it? My gf was complaining the other day of a "draft" - I thought nothing of it, as it's - a Jeep.
But then I noticed this box in the lower right had corner of the passenger side, under the dash, that was open. There's a small lever sticking out the right side, and I could barely get my hands on it, as it's next to the tub. But Sure enough, I flipped it closed, and all was well.
Sometimes this just opens randomly. How does it operate? Is there a lever I'm missing? What's it for anyways?
I've got an 88 YJ btw.

This may sound stupid but wouldn’t that be your heater / vent motor, should be connected to your air controls with a flexible wire.

There are two boxes - one is operated by the temperature lever - warm is closed, then as I move it to a cooler setting, it opens a bit.
The box I'm talking about is all the way in the corner, and none of the heater control vents seem to operate it. All I know is, with the heat on full blast, if that thing's open, it's cold in there while driving. Closed, and it's nice and toasty. I just can't figure out how I can operate it aside from pulling over, getting out, flipping the lid shut, and continuing on my way.

Ok I checked on my Jeep and it’s operated by the Vent leaver, when you put it on the vent position it opens and when you move the leaver off the vent position it closes. There should be a wire connected but it’s hidden on the side of the box.
Hope that helps.

I had the same problem in a previous jeep - never did find out WTH the thing was. I'd always reach down and pull the lever manually to close it. I think the wire was broken or came off.
It was annoying to say the least....

Hmm...there's a small plug that's disconnected, I wonder if that's my problem. I'll look to see if the connection is there somewhere - so is that vent opened electronically?

No there seems to be a wire connected to it that comes from behind on the right side.

The fresh are vent on the passengers side kick panel is operated by sliding the heater control all the way to the right to the VENT position. As you move the control from from HEAT to VENT it should operate a cable that is connected to the arm up on the far right side of the heater box. Only about an inch or two of clearance between the "lever" and the body near where the antenna is mounted. As you move the control from VENT back to HEAT the fresh air vent should again close.
The electrical plug you see is the power to the blower motor resistor that is housed inside the heater housing. It is not an electrically operated vents.

Why are there two vents in my Jeep then? There's the one ALL the way against the kick panel, right against the body, facing the passenger seat, then there's the one closer to the middle of the jeep, facing straight down. WHen I move the heater lever to VENT, you're saying the one in the corner will open, and when I move the temp from warm to cold, the one in the middle will open?

YES. Unless your cables or levers are stuck/rusted.
On the front near the middle of the box you will see a d shaped thing, it diverts air to the windsheild or the floor. Turn your heat on high then push that d shaped thing. You can make it all defrost, all floor or a little of both.
My vent gets stuck open, so I have to reach over and help the vent door shut. I have the same year YJ as you, so it will need a little tlc. I find if you slide the lever to vent gently, most times when you slide it out of vent it will close, slamming it into vent means I have to reach over and close the vent myself.
You can see a little cable with a connector that attached to a stub on that d shaped thing, sometimes adjusting that helps.

Did some "experimenting" today - sure enough, the top lever, when slid to "vent" - opens that box on the right. The temp vent opens the middle box or closes it.
Makes sense now. I'm used to non-jeeps where "vent" is "upper vent" and you get your face and hands blown on - no vents in the jeep lol.
