tank itself from Bluetorch - $300
1" thick chunk of aluminum for a spacer to use the stock fuel pump after I left out a key measurement - $50
after spending an hour or so milling said chunk to right size, $30 to get it welded on
sheet of rubber to replace gasket I lost - $5
Proper gasket after deciding not wanting to worry about the rubber being fuel safe or not - $15
3 taps, 1 drill for fuel pump mounting holes- $20ish
nutserts and tool purchased before realizing I had to use the spacer - $20
3 sets of bolts, lost the first, second were slightly too long, third were just right - $5ish
filler hose...after trips to 7 different parts stores or hose suppliers, buying stuff that won't work, then finally ending up at the dealership - $80
cancelling the order for the vent hose after being able to reuse the stock + $20
not getting tax refunded - $1.53

and then of course the box and aluminum lid for the box I built to house the tank.

$436.53

and I'm sure I've probably forgotten a thing or two. like cutting oil for milling the spacer...shoudl have just gone with a new fuel pump. lesson learned? don't try to be smart :(

this whole build has been a mistake. i sure know what NOT to do next time.

eh, a little bit, but not really. i was trying to keep it low budget and reuse the stock pump and filler and everything. so much for that.

Bootyfabbing your gas tank in with ratchet straps - priceless! No, literally. It didn't cost me anything. LOL I am working on an official tank hold down system this winter.

the tank has a really snug fit in the box, but i'm still going to put some straps over it...probably that real thin water heater strap stuff. i still need to make a proper mount for the filler assembly, but this will work for now.

perhaps later on i'll cover the sides of the box with some thin aluminum, but for now, i'm happy with the fact that it's there.

Have you made any more headway on the tubing? Pics? :D

tube is still in the same position i think since i last posted. i redid the seat mounts a few times. the passenger side is still a little far back but i'm lower now and have about 3" of headroom with my helmet on, so that's cool. these are all from the bbs post i made so you've probably seen them, but i'll post 'em here anyways.

all i need to do for tube is the inside lap belt mounts (have to put a slight bend in them to clear the transfer case hump), the shoulder harness mount, the diagonal (will be hard because the seats are so far back), and some bent tube gussets on the A-overhead and overhead-B nodes. so antsy i can't wait..just spending too much time running around chasing tools to fix a problem or chasing some random part...like that damned filler hose....7 frickin' places...that chaps my hide. and christmas shopping, man that's slowing me down. gotta find a lemon tree tomorrow and then im done.

I dunno chef. I had a buddy from JA build me my fuel cell. .120 wall aluminum, custom to my specs set up to re-use the stock YJ pump assembly. he charged me 350 for the whole thing. I'll post some pics later

ok guys, heres the pics of my custom Aluminum Fuel Cell that was built for me by Todd AKA JeepNBeer on the Jeepaholics board. Its made of .120 wall aluminum, 100% tig welded, internally baffled, has a 1.5 gallon sump box to ensure i won't be starved for fuel, has a drain plug, is set up to use the stock YJ pump and level assembly, and has an estimatred capacity of about 20 gallons. it will be installed recessed into the floor in the back of my YJ.

that looks right nice. mine's just a basic box with a small cup at the bottom similar to the stock tank. the return keeps it full when fuel is low. simple, but it fit the are i had for it.wouldn't have been so bad if i had just remembered to not center the pump hole front to back, and made it an inch taller, i don't know how that got screwed up...

ps-the drain is a great idea

pps-bff!11!!
