View Full Version : Is a Tera Low a "do it yourself"

I am thinking of going to a Tera low. Can a handy person who can turn a wrench do this or it takes a shop or experence or special tools?
I did my lift and SYE, that is about my skill level, and tool level.
And just as important... does it work and does it break itself or stress other things to breaking point.
What you all think...

If you did a SYE, you should be able to do the Tera. It's not any more difficult than the SYE. Check Sams Offroad, they seem to have the best price and also look into the 2lo kit at the same time.

samsoffroad.com is by far the best and is where I got mine. I did not install mine but did watch my mecahanic do it.

Having watched him I can say that it is not something I would want to do myself. It would take a lot of reading and going slow to make sure you do it right.

But if you are really experienced....

the hardest part about the install I thought, was lifting that sucker back up in place after the build!

It might just be easier to replace the 4.11's with 4.88...Never did a gear job, but have been meaning to learn.
The thing is... the 4.11's and 33 inch tires mean I'm going a little fast sometimes, and ain't no power at idle, and it's a 5 speed.
4.88's are about a 15-20% reduction(increase?), but can't turn those off..
Thats why the tera sells, I am sure? I think the 4.11's are ok with the tera. At this point, thats where I am. Do a gear job or a tc job.

Tera kit is much easier. Regearing has to be precise. If not you will take out your whole diff.

Easy enough...get some rtv, snap ring pliers, and while you have the case open, replace the chain! Just follow the instructions and take your time!

Me 2 cents worth........I did it myself and was very proud of myself after it was done. Patted myself on the back. But unless something has changed, the instructions that came with mine, sucked ! Go to Stu's web site. He has a much better write up, and it is was very precise. I printed out the whole process and followed it all the way thru. Mike
