as you may know-it is snowing very hard here in Boulder, CO and 4wd is needed. havent used my 4wd since last season and tried putting it in 4wd tonight and no light came on and it didnt feel like it had engaged. Once I got home through the snow (luckily) I got the light to come on and I decided to test out whether or not it was engaged by putting it in first and pulling a slow tight turn to maybe get a few jerks out of it. But the turn went smoothly and so I tried to goose the gas and make the jeep fish tail on the road to no avail. is there any sure-fire way to test whether my light is "lying" to me or not? please please help...I need my jeep tomorrow

The first thing U can do is double check all your connections on your axle vac. disconnect(pass. side) to make sure everything is where it is suppossed to be. Hopefully U just have a loose wire to the light and not a bad vac. line.

to see if your TC is engaging you can put a piece of tape on your front drive shaft, engage the TC and drive a few feet....if the TC has engaged as it should the front driveshaft would have rotated and the tape would be in a different position from when you put it on...if the TC is working you can then jack up both front wheels and turn the passenger side wheel by hand....if the driver's side wheel also turns your vacuum motor has engaged the slip collar and you are in 4WD....if the driver's side wheel does not turn you have a problem somewhere in the vacuum shift motor system...

wouldn't the jeep refuse to move if I had it in 4wd and it wasn't working properly? I'd like to think that since I am moving and have my indicator light on that my 4wd is working...

PS: Is the tape on the front driveshaft really enough to tell?

just because your light is on or not does'nt mean that your vac. system is or is'nt working properly. U need to make sure your pass. tire is engaged. U could have a vac. leak or the shift collar/fork could be messed up.

how common is a bad vac line and who does cheap repairs on that?

It happens often, although my vacuum system lasted 14 years with zero failures. I switched to manual hubs and eliminated the disco system altogether.

Do you have a set of either 4 jackstands or two floor jacks, or a combination of this so you can raise the Jeep off the ground?

how much is a typical repair on a vacuum tube or the switch on the t-case? or alternatively how much for posi lok

Posi-Loc is around $200.

I bought one a couple years ago along with my JB Conversions SSYE-equiped XFer case. Didn't get around to installing it though. It's planned for sometime soon...

Get underneath your jeep and make sure all your connections are good. One time, my vaccum hose just popped off. Plugged it back in and it was fine.

Hell, if you really wanted just go down to the local parts shop and just buy rubber vacuum hose and cut the old stuff off and put the rubber hose in it's place, no reason you have to stick with hard plastic line. As long as they are run away from stuff (just use the same line the hard lines used) you won't have any problems. Stuff is like $1 dollar a foot maybe so it's not gonna be that expensive. Also, the old hard lines will probably fit inside the new rubber lines so you could cut the original 4wd actuator connection from the axel off and "splice" it into the new rubber line, same thing with the vent. If it does feel a little loose at the connection or your just worried about leaks, toss some RTV around the connection and you'll be good.
