I did a full tune up when I bought the YJ at 104k miles. I change the spark plugs (after I couldn't fire 2 cylinders) at 128k. Now, at 132k I checked them today and they're burnt up already. What's the deal? Where should I look for a problem? I plan to do a motor swap once the Jeep isn't my DD (within 6 months) and it won't be an issue, but it IS getting cold this time a year in Chicago.

Stupid question, but did you change the plug wires when you changed the plugs?

Changed wires, cap, and plugs both times.
Changed all plus distributer, ignition coil the second time.

They're gapped at 35 like they should be.

why do you think they are 'burn't up'?...are those 2 cylinders not firing again?...what color are the plugs?......it could be you have a rich or lean air/fuel mixture or you could be burning oil due to failing rings or a number of other things causing the plugs to fail prematurely.....look in the Haynes manual in the tune-up section and you will see a chart that shows pictures of spark plugs that have been operating in various conditions....find which picture looks like those 2 plugs and the chart could lead you to a solution....

The first time, the two cylanders had shut off. The second time now, they have increased gap a whole setting and are black all over on the tip (spark end). I brushed them off with a wire brush and re-gapped them to 35. We'll see what happens.

Did you try pulling any computer codes??

Obviously the plugs are getting 'fouled' prematurely.... just wondering if there was a *sensor* problem causing the vehicle to run rich (or whichever).

Are you getting any 'white' smoke out the exhaust?? (burning oil)

Just guessing.....

Just have to ask, are you sure you didnt get 2 of the new wires on the wrong plugs?

UPDATE! I changed out the ones that were in since 128k and they are totally burnt red. They were gapped beyond .40 and carboned up pretty bad on top. I had my O2 sensor go bad during the last 5k miles though. I bought the Bosch Platinums this time and they seem to be good for now (5 miles of driving). It is a night and day difference though.
I work at a garage (not a tech though) and can find time to do some stuff. Maybe I'll have one of my techs take a look on Sunday.

So why might they be burning up so quickly?

what kind of intake and exhaust does the Jeep have? Has the fuel filter ever been changed?

Another possibility is that you're sucking crap into the motor from one of those sources. If your exhaust system gets clogged up, the back pressure will cause exhaust gasses to remain in the cylinder and you won't get a quality burn.

The exhaust was replaced with stock parts about 2 years ago and the cat was replaced this summer. The intake is all stock as well.
The fuel filter was replaced every year since I've owned the Heep.

I showed the old plugs to the tech today at work and he said it is running WAY rich to do that to a plug in 6 months and it is running way too hot as a result. I guess I'm going to replace the evap can curtousey of the stealer**** and go from there.
