Ok... As most of you know, I drive a beater 89 yj.. luckily, its not my daily driver. Im keeping it street legal, because its cheaper for me to pay insurance on the jeep, and keep my tow rig as a "secondary" vehicle... Anyway.. long story short.. I went to smog the jeep yesterday, and it failed. It ran clean as a whistle at any RPM above idle, but at idle, its got a miss fire somewhere, which caused too many hydrocarbons, thus causing it to fail. It didn't fail by much.. Max HC was 120 my jeep had 210... Anyone know what could be causing the stumble/missfire at idle? Ive already checked the plugs, and all the vaccum lines have been replaced, so there are no leaks there.. Anyone got any ideas?

definetly sounds related to ignition advance. find a buddy with a scope and check the spark patterns at idle. if you were in nj i could check it and tell whats wrong right away. sounds like you need to time it or possibly get a new distributor/coil/wires

I was thinking about that.. Its hitting the shop tommorow, and I'll spend some time looking that stuff over.. I havent replaced the dist, coil or wires for a LONG time.. and this thing has 223k on the orig motor. Runs like a bloomin TOP and clean as a whistle above idle.. but at idle there is stil a slight hesitation, as I said.. I do have to say, Im utterly impressed with the 4.2 motor itself. The carb has been rebuilt twice in its lifetime, one time by me, and once by the PO... Im very impressed, and I still love driving it on the road :)

sounds like that crappy stock computer controled piece o' crap carb is clogged again. do a search on cleaning out the carb (can't remember exactly what part needs cleaned, I got rid of mine) but if you clean it out it fixes the idle problem.
