I have a friend considering putting EZ lockers in the front and rear of his wrangler. I have one in the front, but do you think they are bad for the rear axle as opposed to a Detroit? Thanks.

A locker in a D35 rear is a broken axle shaft waiting to happen.
Lock the front. And start thiking about upgrading the rear.

I ran Ez's front and rear on the D30 and 35 for 4 years on 33 M/T's. All trail types from dirt roads to 5 rated trails. No issues in the rear but I did have problems with snapping axles in the front.
You'll be fine.

What I was getting at is whether or not the EZ is a bad locker in the rear when traveling on the streets. Are they tolerable...meaning do they lock and unlock like a detroit? I have heard that they sometimes have problems unlocking.
Jeeper: I take it you had no trouble on the streets?

No issues on the street but I never used it as a daily driver. Most of the street driving was getting to the trails. The rear tires did chirp around corners when turning from a stop and getting on the go pedal. The only other time where they act funny is while driving in a straight line, you step on the gas hard and then let off right away...the jeep will feel like it wants to shift lanes, this was enhances since I ran with no track or sway bars. However, not many people drive that way so its really not an issue.

To answer your Q, & not having personal experiance with them, I would compare the costs between the two. A sort of indirect answer to your Q., is I run a no-slip power trax and they do work great on the street and off road. The're under $400.00. Maybe compare that to the EZ.

if you are concerned about street handling, get a selectable locker. I run a detroit EZ locker in the D30, and i just ordered an ARB for the 8.8 i am getting ready to install.
Oh, and id skip spending the money to lock the 35. thats a PITA waiting to happen. if ya look hard enough, you could prolly find a limited slip, disc brake equipped 8.8 for the price of an easy locker. I got mine with discs, a LS, and 3.73 gears for 135.
Of course, since i have to regear it to 4.10s, i decided to go ahead and pony up the scratch for an ARB
