New to the forum and need help.
I was searching last night and found info in this thread about the nutter bypass. My 89 YJ, 6 cyl 5 speed, had the typical symptoms so i figured I would give it a shot this afternoon.

Following instructions found on JU I started the process. The instuctions said to turn front screws before unplugging the stepper connection so I turned both screws on lower front of carb until it started to stall, then i was going to unplug the stepper motor connect in the rear of carb, but the motor died before I could do so. So I opened both screws 4 full turns back out and attempted to start the motor but I got nothing, absolutly nothing. It never attempted to turn over. Needless to say I continued with the process, made all neccessary connections, hoping by some slim chance things would be different when I got through. But still no start.

Could the timing had been thrown off by a stalled carb to the point it won't start?

I've never set timimg but I hear its not that hard, But could somthing else be wrong?

It ran pretty well before as far as starting and overall dependability...

Please Help

The screws that you turned down are the idle speed.Did you try giving it gas as you tried to restart it?You will need to if you turned down the idle.Pull a spark plug to determine if you have spark.I doubt that anything happened with your timing unless you removed the dist to do this[dont know why you would but].Recheck all your connections. If you have spark and fuel it should run unless timing was moved.

You most likely have a wire unhooked or turned the idle down too low to the point there is no fuel.Pour a little [2 ounces] of gas down the carb and try to start it.If it runs your not gettin fuel if not you probably dont have spark. Good luck Dan:puzzled:

Dunno about the Nutter, but there's no reason your timing should have changed at all.

Good luck!

You said, "It never attempted to turn over." I'm asssuming then that the starter was working , but you never heard the engine fire. I would suggest you remove the air cleaner and look down in the carb. The Nutter instructions asked that you get the stepper motor pins fully extended into the carb. You can look into the carb and check this. You can see the top pin and it will be extended into the venturi about 1/4 inch.

OK, recheck your connections ...on some YJ's the wire colors are different; that is, the orange wire from the distributor will actually end up connected to a pale green wire at the module.

If the pins are not extended into the carb, you can remove the stepper and extend them and replace the motor; this is not real easy. You will need to be very careful and use a mirror to get the assembly back together.

If it cranks, you need to set the timing immediately. I'm going back over the Nutter instruct. and trying to think of anything that might have happened ...I believe the computer has made one last dying effort to screw you ...leaning out the carb and changing the timing

Thanks for the info.

What happened was that my starter actually went out. I made the assumption I had done something else to cause it not to start. But after I had everything put back together I took off the starter and took it apart, I had a brush that was wore pretty bad causing it not to work. So after I remedied that, it satrted with no problem at all, idles and runs good.

Thanks again for all the input.
