View Full Version : 8.8 virgin run... and a thunk

The title is self descriptive. I am running 4.10s in the 8.8 with a shortened cherokee front driveshaft and stock drivetrain with a brand new clutch. When I let off of the gas and hit the clutch, I can hear a thunk from the rear. I didnt notice it in first gear, but the next three i did. The D35 made this noise when i would tap the gas but not letting off of the clutch.
I set up the gears myself. my biggest fear. The backlash seemed fine, any other gear setup probs that could cause this?
I did not check the driveshaft U joints yet... any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for the help

Thanks for the ideas. I am hoping that its not the throwout bearing or the rear output bearing seeing as they are both brand new. Trans mount is very possible as is the motor mount. Thanks for the ideas.

Check the driveshaft slip joint as well. I've seen em bind a bit when worn and didnt want to slip untill a bit of spring wrap changed the angle and they clunked a bit when they finally moved. Also make sure the U-bolts are nice and tight, not letting the axle rock under the springs.

I had similar symptoms when my passenger side e-brake cable locked up.
