My friend and I built a custom cage in my Jeep about a month ago in the shop he works in. I was going to wait until I got it all painted and everything before I posted pics, but I can't wait that long:) I'll get pics of it finished when I get it painted and take the top off. Let me know what you think

We used 1 3/4" .120 wall HREW tubing.

Looks good.. did you tie it into the frame? and HREW is a decent choice, considering the price of DOM lately

Thanks for all of the compliments

We haven't tied it into the frame yet, byt we are planning to at some point. We are also going to add more tubing, but we ran out of time and we've had too many other things going on to work on it.

The tubing ended up costing me about $1.50/foot because we ordered around 500ft. The owner of the shop has some other projects he's using it on and the more you buy, the more you save.

I would have liked to of used DOM, but 1.) it's too expensive for my budget and 2.) I've heard of a lot of people who have had good luck with HREW.

Well, its MHO, that for the kinda rolls we see in your average trail rig, HREW is plenty strong.

just bought 96 foot of DOM for $60. i'm going back to pick up the last 4 sticks the place has in a couple of days. the place is sick of sitting on it, and seeing it take up space. apparently, there isn't much demand for it around here. he is selling it for $15 a stick (24'). we're building my buddy butch a cage, fenders, and some other crap right now with the sticks we have, the other sticks are for mine.

cage looks pretty damned good, only question is what is going to keep it from folding sideways? are there some supports in there?

No joke, I'm going to have about $700 in tubing alone in my cage when it's all said and done.

Cage does look good, and I know your not done, but as suggested you will definately need some support for sideways movement. My buddy and I each rolled and our stock cages both were bend sideways pretty good.

Thanks for the tips

I am going to add a diagonal support behind the seats during the next build-up. I might make an "X" (behind the front seats) for even more support. But I am having a hard time getting myself to do it because it would cut off access to the rear for people to get in unless the top is off. But safety on the trail is more important.

Zman: I saw the video of your roll, it looked pretty nasty. Is there anything else you would recommend based on your experience? That goes for anyone else who has rolled too. Thanks!

Floor tie in into the frame, at least in the front at your feet and the rear near the tail lights. The stock cage just ripped the sheet metal in the tub above the pass side tail light.

You can barely see my frame tie in in the front. I still have the bent stock cage in the back which I hope to have upgraded sometime this year.

As far as the X and access to the back, hopefully someone here has a good idea to share with us.

Looks pretty darn'd good to me. If U do a support behind the seat, the "X" might not be needed. You already have some triangulation on the rear hoop, so maybe a gusset or small support diagnally @ the front top window corners. [like Z's] And then maybe an "oh sh$t" handle to finish it off next to them. Nice work.

OBTW> did I spy some overspray there on the seat? :rotflmao:

Good idea! I think I will do something like that, so I still have easy access to the rear. We are planning on doing some "oh sh!t" handles when we get more time.

There is overspray everywhere! I covered the entire inside and still got paint on everything! That'll teach me to paint inside a garage that it barely big enought for the Jeep. I had to sand and repaint the entire inside. I am planning on taking the whole cage out this spring and painting it really well.
