View Full Version : Motor Mounts Question

Hiya,
I've got a 95 with the 4.0L and the MORE Bombproof 1" Motor Mounts on it. Last summer the bracket that bolts to the engine sheared off the bolts holding it and the entire engine fell on the passenger side about 3-4 inches. Got that all fixed. Now, it seems when I apply torque (in first mostly), the engine/tranny are rotating more than normal. To be honest I never really noticed it until today. Crawled under the jeep and all looks to be ok although the motor mount rubber appears cracked. It's hard to say if these cracks are superficial or not. I guess my question is this, has anyone seen a rubber failure on the MORE bombproof mounts? How much should the engine torque "over" so to speak?
Thanks for the help!
Cheers,
cc

Same thing happened to my 95 except my tranny mount and torque bushings died when the bolts sheared. I replaced them and all is well again.

Yeah, it was a little more devastating for me. When the engine fell, it took out the distributer.

Now I'm trying to decide if the motor mount is bad and just curious to know how much "roll" of the engine is normal under torque.

Have you checked the tranny/skidplate mount? Are these the MORE poly or rubber?

I've not climbed under to look at the tranny mount yet. I suppose I should do that! And I think the motor mount has rubber (it's black anyway and doesn't look like the shiny poly I'm used to seeing). It's their bombproof 1" MM. I do know something's up cause my tranny and transfer case sticks are bumping into each other. I need to get under there and move/tighten up the tcase sticks and I can take a look at the tranny mount.

Any other advice is most welcome.

my neighbor has those mounts and he broke one... forget which but the rubber ripped/cracked it looked like. we just pulled it out, burned out all the urethane or whatever it is, and filled it with window weld. let it set up for a few days and she was good as new.

i have a 2" body lift...

when it was installed i'm ASSuming the person who put it on added these to act as spacers. i have them up top and obviously on the bottom mounts also.

doesn't really fit in this topic, but yeah those spacers are just to keep the radiator hoses located properly, with a 1in body lift you can just do a 1in motor mount lift and youdon't have top worry about dropping the radiator

i'm pretty uneducated in most areas concerning jeeps but this one mostly...

however... wouldn't it be more beneficial to lower the radiator (in order to keep the fan centered in the shroud as opposed to hitting it) as opposed to raising the engine and changing the driveline angles and such?

This isn't done to align the fan/radiator/shroud. MM lifts are installed to help with driveline vibes by dropping the output shaft of the t-case a bit.

Looks like this thread is getting off topic. Here is a little help from Stu (http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/lift-1.htm)

Hopefully this will clear up some of your Questions.
