:teary: Anyone ever replaced their own windshield. If so any advise?

Have never done this on a Jeep but have done it on other gasketed windshield cars. Generally done it this way:

1. Get your gasket and put a nice bead of windshield sealant in there, then get the gasket wrapped around the windshield.

2. Make sure the opening of the windshield is really clean.

3. Get a nice strong, but thin, rope and wrap it all the way around the gasket inside the channel, leave at least two feet or so at either end. The two ends should meet - I usually like to have the ends meet in the center of the windshield at the bottom, but you can do it at the top - its just harder to keep the rope in the channel leaving it at the top, I've found.

4. Put the whole assembly loose at the opening, push the two ends of the rope inside the vehicle.

5. With someone pushing light but firm on the windshielf from the outside, grab one end of the rope and pull perpendicular from the windshield. You should see the lip of the gasket pulling over the edge of the opening. Instead of going all the way from one end, I usually go to the end of the top, then go on the other side to the end of the top, and keep switching till the whole gasket is seated.

6. Once it's all seated right, put a nice bead of sealant between the gasket and the opening and also if it's easy to get to on the inside between the gasket and the opening. Some people do this step at the beginning, but I have always found it makes a royal mess when you're pulling the rope.

This might not work for all vehicles (or even Jeeps) but it works pretty good on most that have gasketed, not glue-in windshields.

Yes I suppose you could do it your self. I paid right around $ 150 for the glass including installation. If you brake it or screw it up you won't save a dime. I don't think its worth it.

I think only the earlier YJs had rubber gaskets, the later ones like my 93 use a glue in type windshield. I replaced mine quite easily. Use the 3M sealant, its available in a roll of black caulk that you just lay in the frame and stick the windshield to. I wrote up a how to a while back with a good diagram of how the gasket and molding all fits together, I'll see if I can find it. The hardest part of the whole thing is removing the glass from the frame without breaking it.

My 93 yj has a gasket on the frame but the window is glued in. Not sure how is all fits. I do know that the one in there is cracked and needs to come out. Just not sure how tho get it out.

:teary: Cheapest I have found is $210.00 plus tax. Having it done friday they come to your place to do it. Just needs to be inside out of the weather.

The prices seem to vary. I thought about trying it myself but I was not all that sure about it. The glass alone is like $120 out of Quadra tech.

 I looked at it and thought if the glass was about $100.00 + and the new seal another $20-$30 + let them do it and if it still leaks it's their problem. By the way make sure your hood is latched before you leave the house and you might not have to by a windshield. HA! HA!.
