About two weeks ago, have had my XJ for a couple of years now. both have the 4.0L HO.
Yesterday I scooped up a pair of axles from a 89 YJ (4.10's) for the cost of a half tank of gas, three hour drive to the guys house who was giving them away.:brows:
I did notice however that the D35 on my YJ has a rubber fill plug and the D35 that I scooped up has a threaded plug.:puzzled:
Is there a difference in pumpkins? or did some just come that way?

It's just a different cover, no biggie.
The differential's internal parts changed in model year 1994-up. The spider gears are differently sized.

The 1987-1989 years still had a real plug. Those axels have smaller drum brakes on the D35 and the axels are non c-clip. Your current (inner) axels on the D35 will not interchage with the older D35 so don't expect to use them as spares. Front has a few minor changes, but you should be able to use the inners as spares. Make sure you carry a 7mm allen wrench with you. You need it to remove the front disc brakes. 7mm is a bear to find, seems most kits go from 6-8mm. I know that Ace Hardware can get them through there warehouse.

Why would you spend the time to take out the gears from the 89, and pay someone to set them up in your 92?? Its a bolt in proposition to bolt in the 89 axles, you can be done in a day... Thats what Id do, and it would continue with your "free" theme. Just remember that the axles are from an 89 YJ, when ordering any parts for them...

They were left out for the passed year and have rusted quite a bit.
The '92 axles have very little rust and all new brake parts all round.
I was under the impression you were going to just bolt em in. I would not let rust get in the way. If the 89's are good then I would swap them in. You do loose on the rear brakes but at least you don't have to deal with a c-clip. Braking an axel on a D35 sucks, sucks even more if you don't carry spares. At least with the 89 axel if you break down you can still drive home.

switch the brakes over to the new axles, (I think all the parts for brakes will transfer) after hitting the tubes and pumpkin with a wire brush/grinder/resurfacer, then primer, then paint. Take you less time than switching the guts, and look better too (at least till the first mud hole). I mean, you have to take the brakes off to get to the guts anyway, might as well just do the brakes and a little cleanup and call it a day.

Yes, ditto on the hard to find socket. I got a 8mm and ground it down, nice snug fit now. I belive you mean the older non c-clip d35s have the 10" drums, the newer ones have the 9" drums. I have a '87 and '94, so I get to work on them quite frequently. :naw:

From what I'm reading the the 89 Axles are better to keep with some swaping of brake stuff.
My only concern is the D35 is leaking diff oil on the yoke seal side. is it safe to assume that the gears have to come out to replace the seal?
I might just work on these and convert when time permits to SOA.

I thought it was the other way around. When I gave my buddy my old D35 he said his brakes (in his 89) were smaller than my 93.
