ok guys and gals

i recently bought an 87 yj. i am comming from a fully trail ready xj, with 8", 35's, geared, arb's front and rear, etc. (removable doors, longing for an open top), i was planning on doing a soa with full traction 0" lift springs to help with axle wrap, but comming from an xj i am used to it. i am going to swap in my 44, and high pinion 30. next i was looking at some pioson spyder rocker protection, warn or home-made bumpers, and will be swapping the entire drivetrain from my xj in (4.0l, aw4, 231).

how necessary is a dropped pitman arm? I never used one on my xj and it was managable, later i will do some sort of high steer set-up. is there anything i am missing? thanks for the help.

Your D30 in the YJ is already an HP unit, for starters.. second, for an upgrade, slap some TJ shafts in it, and call it good for up to 35's. Even with the 0" lift springs, you will need something to fight axle wrap, because you WILL get it.
Try to steer without a dropped pitman arm, and the SOA steering angles, I can guarantee you won't like it.. so just do it right and get the dropped arm to start with.

i am swapping in my 30, because gears is the only thing i cant do myself. i am already running the tj shafts.

thanks for the input about the pitman arm, thats exactly what i thought.

Do you weld? If you have to have the work done (pay for it, in other words) I'd rather swap gears and shafts into your existing housing than have to cut the XJ/TJ mounts off your XJ housing and weld-on the YJ mounts. If you know how to weld, then the choice is obvious.

yes, i will be doing all the work myself. a little time with the cut off wheel and the grinder and things will be all good.
