View Full Version : U-Bolt conversion for Dana 30?

I just did this conversion on my Dana 35 and it seems to have worked great so far. The 5/16" drill bit was perfect for me. My question lies in the ability to do this up front. I read on a link found here about 2 months ago that it wont work on the 30 becasue there is insufficient room for nuts to be put on the back.

Is this true? The quick eyeball job I did made it seem to me that there was more room than on the rear diff.

Or did I read the write up wrong and he was saying that drilling the holes out to 5/16" is too much, not enough sidewall left for strength.

Anyone who has done this upgrade to their 30 please chime in or if you have tried it and learned hard lessons

Thanks

Thats alot of $$$!

I also did the rear strap to u-bolt swap and had read that it wont work on the D30. Like you, It looked like it should work but didnt try it.

Recently I replaced my front shaft and ordered u-bolt style yokes for the D30 and tcase side. IIRC they were $50 ea from Tom Woods.

I feel much better having NO more straps holding my u-joints in place:clapping:

edit: Just looked at the dynatrac site... pro rock 60:agree: I want one!

The u-bolt kit there selling is for axle to spring u-bolts. Not drive shaft.

yeah it sure looks like it would fit to me...guess i will have to buy another set of ubolts from NAPA and try it after some precise measuring...

Any out there done this yet,,,holler

BTW for those of you who havent done the rear end yet the part from NAPA is under 10 bucks and that is with the 5/16" bit that you'll need included. Search the wrangler forum for a good write up "ujoint ubolt"

the spicer part number is U-bolt part #2-94-58X...I gave this to the guy at NAPA and he cross referenced it with no problems. Here is the article I was referring to and this guy states that there is not enough clearance behind the yoke. I think he may be wrong about my 91...maybe I have an old cj dana 30 in mine :)

apparently if you use a ford 9" ubolt it will just slide right in. i meant to do it last week but didn't get around to it.
