Hi All, I'm new to the forum and have a ? abt the oil pressure on my YJ's 4cyl.

I drove it round trip to AZ from near Rochester, NY last week. From what I remember the OP at idle used to be abt 40 and at abt 2500 rpm abt 60-70.

Some where along the trip I noticed the OP was at 80 on the gage.(full scale), when at above 2500rpm). So being at abt 3500 miles from the last oil change I had the oil changed and filter changed. This seemed to do nothing to the pressure it's still at full scale even now at idle. Is this a problem? I don't seem to have a decline in performance- the 4cyl small engine is a dog anyhow but it's no wose than before the pressure went high. Temp seems to be in the normal range, coolant checked out ok, too.

What should be the normal OP ranges?

What could possibly cause Hi OP?

I had read somewhere you can hook a mechanical pressure gage to the engine. Where can I get on of these and where does it hook to?

Thanks Bill

A mechanical OP gauge isnt a bad idea to confirm the problem, but I'd bet your problem is dirty contacts between the OP sender and the wires or between the gauge and the wires.

I've had the same prob and cleaning all of the contacts helped.

Thanks for the replies to my post! I checked all the contacts and they all seemed clean, ohmed out the wire and it was near zero ohms. So I took the plunge and bought a new sending unit. ($37) ....oops found I needed a 1 1/16 inch 6 point deepwell socket so went to sears ($8)and bought one. Back to the Jeep and removed the old sender and put the new one in, hooked it up and it now reads 37 at idle and just under 60 at 2000!! Work time about 10 min. Time to get the part then packing up everything and trip to sears about 30min. Savings I estimate abt $150 --DIY lives on!!!!

Glad to hear you fixed the problem yourself.

Also wanted to say congrats on putting up with a YJ for 2500 miles, let alone a 4 cyl YJ.

Were you rocking the soft or hard top for that drive? I used to get frustrated when I had to drive my old YJ back and forth to school, from Boston to Amherst.
