While 36" SX's don't seem like much to everyone else on this board, they are a big deal to me (and my step-daughters!), so I thought I'd post a couple pics...

Now, everyone can go back to looking at pics of YJ's on 40's and bigger....

Hey, looks good IMO! :beerchug:
BTW: Would you happen to know a TJ guy who goes by MrRubicon?? He puts together F&R D44's for the TJ guys. He's from your area & I wheeled with him last summer in Moab.

I think it looks great but then I am still on 35's:brows:
Until I get the Dana 60's built and installed that is all it will get.
It still ends up as a hard call. Do I go straight to 40's? That is a huge tire and very heavy plus the jeep will not fit in the garage (with out some work on the garage) or buy 37's that I know in a year or two I will be swapping out. Either way it will get 17" bead locks.

Thanks! I'm kinda partial to it.... :)
I don't know that guy.
I'm now trying to decide which gear ratio I want to swap in. I'm still running (gasp) 3.07's! It hums along the highway at 75-80 at like 2100 RPMs, though....
Deciding between 4.56's and 4.88's. With no overdrive gear, I don't want to go too low. It doesn't see a lot of highway travel, but sooner or later, it may end up being my step daughter's daily driver if I don't wreck it on the trails...

Matt you must really like your step daughter!
There is no way I would let someone else use my YJ. My F-250 maybe but not the Jeep.

Well, here's how I look at it....
I have probably $10,000 into the Jeep as it sits right now. My step-daughter is now almost 13. I've made a deal with her that if she pulls STRAIGHT A's for the next 3 years she will get the Jeep. If she falls short, even on one class one semester, no Jeep. We are going to do anything we can to help her make straight A's.
The way I figure, with 3 years of straight A's, she's bound to be looking at some college scholarships, most likely well in excess of the $10,000 I have invested in the Jeep. I can always build another Jeep :)

I'll make straight a's and act like your step daugher to get that thing! Man those look like pizza cutters after looking at my 35x15.50 sx's. :beerchug:

Sorry.... my step-daughter is prettier.... LOL
These are some pics from the wedding when it had 35x15.50's on it. I needed some new tires, and I found a smokin deal on these 36's. When all is said and done, after selling the old tires and wheels, plus the set that came with the 36's, I've got $200 into the set of new tires and wheels.

I liked the fat look of the 35x15.50's better, but they are bearing busters.... (especially on the 12" rims)

What is your axle setup? That thing has a perfect stance! Tires don't look out of place at all. I don't ever see myself going bigger then 36 or 37's...way to overkill for the type of trailriding I do.

They are ScoutII Dana 44's out of a 77 I found in a junk yard. I redid the brakes and ground off the perches and set them in as-is. They are still geared 3.07's from the factory, but hopefully that will change soon. The 35x15.50's wore out a lot of the seals and bearings so I'll have to go through them both when they get re-geared.
Ironic, I had a Cherokee that leaked motor oil like crazy, but didn't leak anywhere else. The YJ has a motor that doesn't leak a drop, but everything ELSE leaks...

Yep man I hear ya on the bearing part. I run mine on 15x10s though, gonna take em down to 5psi as soon as I get it moving again. Are they lighter or heavier than your old 35" sx's? I would think they would be lighter, only 1" taller but 3" skinner.

Around the same... I figure they will be easier on the bearings due to less rolling resistance and surface area on the road. So far they have been awesome on the street. That may be due to also replacing both side's wheel bearings at the same time as well.
It will be interesting to finally get it off-road again and see if I miss the stability that the extra width gave me. I won't miss not being able to fit between trees, though!

Could you give me a quick measurement? What size rims are those and how much backspacing? The problem with my 35" sx's and 15x10 rims is that its so wide it doesnt fit on my trailer, so I'm stuck with putting on my old 29x10.50 sx's on stock rims so it fits then putting on my 35s before I wheel. As you can guess it gets old after awhile. How wide is it from the outside of the tire to the outside of the other one? I'm hoping when I go bigger I can go skinner and not have to swap tires to make her fit on the trailer. I was thinking 36x12.50 like yours, 37x13 boggers, or some 38x12.50 tsl's. Thanks a million!

Looking good. I use 488's on 37's and it does great on the hwy.

I think the measurement was 74" or so with the 36's. With the 35's, it was almost 81". I have a 71.5" wide trailer deck and was thinking about using a set of stock Zuk rims I had that have worn 31's on them. It was perfect width wise, but the front calipers rubbed the flat Zuk rims so bad they wouldn't turn. I may still use them with some thin spacers if I ever need to trailer it. I'm hoping to hit Tellico once I re-gear it, but it looks like a house purchase may be in my future first!

Looks better with the 36's, Matt. Congrats on the nuptuals...didn't know you had all of that going on.

Thanks for the congrats! It's been a whirlwind this past year and a half. Between the new job, new bride and built-in family, and some pretty major changes on Mangler, things have been a bit weird this past year. Looking at buying a house now, so Mangler may be on hold for a bit.

Hehehe...I'm the king of 'hold'. I've finally almost got the CJ-7 finished up...did the underhood spaghetti over the weekend and electrical checks yesterday. First battery wouldn't take a full charge, so I pulled down the red top that was in it when the engine died and I have that one on the charger now. Gonna dump the fluids in this week, prime the oil pump, and see if I can get her fired up. If that goes well, I'll finish up the brakes & steering on the weekend and see about some test driving. As a result, the Scrambler's just been sitting outside under a couple of tarps. Oh, and I finally got myself a trailer about a month ago.

I also use 36 (Iroks) with Dana 44 out of a waggy, they work great. But just broke an axle on the comp. I just found a pair of dana 44 with 35 splines that will go on the back but still waiting for ARB to release the locker for d44w/35 splines. In the meanwhile I will use a spool to check how they perform (currently using ARB)

Do you have any close-up pics of your steering setup? I'm contemplating re-doing mine.
Thanks!

Hey Mangler,
Congrads on the marriage and welcome to step-fatherhood! These pics are possibly of whats going to happen to you in about 6 years or so!
My step-daughter, whom came into my life at age 11 was helping me in the garage this past winter and says.. you know what i'd really like to do? I'd like to build a Jeep of my own! Every Sunday at our house is what we call Jeep Sunday.. my wife, myself and step-daughter are off together so we end up wrenching on the Jeeps. These pics are of last weekend. We had the body off Jessica's Jeep in six hours, the top pic is of her on frame detail! She's now 21, going on her third year of college, works hard and has really made us proud.. so a Jeep project it is.
The Jeep's a 1987 YJ, and will have a full cage, stroked 4.2, Skyjacker lift and 31" radial Swampers, body off paint, etc. I'll keep you guys posted as we go along. I also included a pic of the CJ-7 i'm just finishing up!
