View Full Version : 87 soft top diff from 88 up?

Hi all, So what exaclty is the difference between a 86-87 and 88-95 soft top. I am looking at getting a replace a top and they state that there is a difference?.

No difference that I can see. On the 87, you may not have the rails on the doors and tub that your soft top mounts to. I have an 87, and ordered the 88-90 kit, because I had the soft top rails already on the lower half doors.
It worked for me, just make sure you get a windshield channel for the top of the frame, and you should be all set.

Thanks i will go ahead and get the 88 up one as my top is a mix form every year anywhay.

Except that the side windows in the rear are different to '87.
88-95 seal @ the driver's door with a channel like is on the tub.
The 87 one connects at the door the same way the tailgate bar slides onto the rear window. ie., the hardware has a "C" in it, and the window has an "O" . You slide the line O cylinder up into the C channel (runs top of the door to the tub)
So to answer your question, NO an 88+ YJ top will NOT work with 87 hardware - at least properly and/or without major modification.

Cool i think you answered my question, All is good, as I seem to have the hardware from an 88 up as I have the channel fitting and not he C.
