ok so some of you may have seen my previous post about the gas tank lift.

well i finished it, it is now exactly two inches higher and fit perfectly..i love the clearance .

the biggest part of the project is to have the stock skid modified, i had a good friend who just happens to be a welder by trade do mine, he basically cur the skid 2 inches from the bend and moved the peices down and welded them together on both sides.

here are some pics with some explanation

here is the stock skid on the right and the newly modified skid on the left
notice how the new skid is 2 inches lower

this is how my gas tank looked like, now is a good time to clean it as mine had a lot of mud caked on it

here is a picture of the pad, this thing was filthy, but i took a brush and some hose water and it looked new after a few minutes

another pic showing the new and the old skids

ok onto the install

when you remove the tank and skid, i also removed the exhaust system to make this project easier, but you might not have to

here is the crossmember, outlined with a black marker is the part you have to cut in order to lift the tank higher

here is the view from the back without the tank in there( i wish i could lift it this high)

cut and painted crossmember, i used a grinder to cut it and it was fast and painless and easy too

then put it back together and here is the finished project

that's it enjoy the newly gained clearance :)

Nice job. Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of doing this to mine. Do you have a before and after pic from the rear that you can post, to really see the difference.

Thanks

no before shot...just add 2 inches to the after pic and you have the before shot.

remember this can only be done if you have a 2 inch+ bodylift

Looks good. Everyone just says the bad things about body lifts....not the good things like that and also easier to work on the jeep with alittle gap between the tub and frame. I'm thinking about adding another 1" to my daystar bodylift for reasons such as that.:beerchug:

That looks sweet, i did pretty much the same thing, only i cut out the rear cross member, and welded the bumper to the back so it replaced the cross member for support. I then took a piece of 3/16 steel and bent it up just like you did to tuck the tank up againts the tub with the 1" body lift and moved it back 3" or so where the cross member used to be. It now attaches to the rear bumper in the back and the front in the stock locations.
Here's a pic showing the added ground clearence which is WAY NICE, sorry don't have anything close up like yours...Anyways GOOD WORK MAN looks SWEET!

Just when I thought I was done working on my Jeep, ya come up with another project. :rotflmao: At least this one is cheap. I only have a 1" BL but every inch counts. Nice write up, can you give a guestimate of time to do this mod.

I have a 1" BL and will be able to raise 1". It will not work with no BL.

if you have to ask you must not be aware that in stock form the top of the tank is resting on the body

jeepik,

I assume there is probably a half inch between the tank and the tub in stock form? In case you missed my earlier post, about how many hours of labor do you guestimate for the project. Want to know if it is worth it for 1".

right, i understand all of that, i have a 1" body lift and want to raise the tank 1" which can make a big difference on my departure angle.

well i would guess my friend spent an hour - 2 hours modifing the skid

then it took me two hours to take everything off, about an hour to cut everything, and being generous 2 hours to put it back together...

mind you i spread this over 4 days, and took my time as i wasnt in a big hurry. can it be done in 1 day??? absolutely

biggest pain is modifying the gas skid

honestly i doubt i would do it for an inch, not worth the trouble in my opinion, two inches is a whole different story, there is a small gap still there , would say about half an inch
