Ok so even if I get the dash off to remove the 4 x 6 dash speakers, how do I remove them. I'm sure I will be able to see it clearer if I take it apart but from just looking underneath the speaker is mounted on what looks to be 4 screw studs. No nuts to unscrew but its secured from something. Anyone know??

There are 4 nuts that you need to remove in order to get that speaker out... they're a pain to get at, and you need to twist your arm in ungodly manners to access it.

Good luck.

keep following em... they're against the speaker. Then you have to pry them out... it's fun... took me a day almost to swap em out.

I'd just say screw it and take it down to your local stereo shop and have them do it. That is the only thing I will not change out in my YJ.

be careful... all of the shops in my area charge stupid crazy amounts to get it done... I said screw it and built boxes for 4 6 1/2" speakers... those little 4x6's sound like crap... even if you buy nice ones.

DUDE!!! Its not hard at all. Took me just under a hour to do both!!! Passenger side is easy but the drivers side has the stupid parking brake. Hope you have small hands. If not pay the neighbors kid to do it for you!!!

There should be a FAQ stickied at the top of the forum and that FAQ should have links to all the standard questions....anyways.

There are these little nuts holding the speaker on those threaded posts. It will me a MAJOR pita to get them off. Once theyre off and you put new speakers in use wing nuts to replace the nuts that came off.

Take one or a couple of the nuts to some place like Lowes or Home Depot, and in the screw/hardware section they SHOULD have a little thing you can try to thread the nut on to get the correct size wing nut.

Wing nuts make the reinstall 400000000.3345% easier. You MAY want to get a few thick washers if you get 4x6s that have the tweeters stick out past the cone.

Folding the windshield is the absolute BEST way to replace these speakers and it took me an hour to do. I also went and replaced the torx bolts on all the fold down hardware with regular bolts while i had it all out/apart.

If that thin black fabric is not torn or worn out, leave it. It will keep mud/debris off the speakers, and anyone looking wont see you new speakers.... not that anyone would try to steal 4x6s out of a jeep, if they did they are obviously INSANE.

Does the entire dash have to come off as well as folding the windsheild????

dash doesn't need to come off, windshield doesn't need to fold down, just have a buddy pull out on the dash for you and then put the VULCAN DEATH GRIP on it and you will be fine!

I just replaced mine and it was not hard at all. The windshield frame has to go down, and just unbolts your dash/support frame and just pull it out enough to unscrew the nutes with a socket.

youll need to un bolt the 2 torx on each side that hold the roll bar to the windsheild. Youll need to un bolt the torx on those little brackets just over the speaker.
Now, you may want to spray your hinges with wd40 or the likes, and start wobbling the windshield slowly down. If its never been down before it will be CRANKY. Be careful you donf fold the windsheild by folding the metal of the hinhes ABOVE the hinge. Once the windsheild is down, collect all the quartes, pencils, crayons, leaves and other stuff youll find. Then start unbolting all the torx on the top of the dash plate I think theres like 15 in all. Also unbolt the torx next to the speaker holes 3 on each side, you can slide the dash back and rest it on the collumn (Be sure to remove that little center panel with the turn signals on it). This will allow much easier access to the speakers versus going up from underneath.

USE WING NUTS when the new speakers go back in. Reverse the above process.

Enjoy new speakers.

yea watch out when uy fold that WS frame down...... i ended up bending the metal ..... but i made the DEATH weld over it now those hindges are like 8000,000,000,900,001.02 times as storng so yeah you MIGHT want to take a torch and heat the hindges ( where the pin goes through ) and then shake them slowly down! :beerchug:
