View Full Version : progress on my spring over
started last night by unbolting everything, got to the point of only needing to unbolt the drag link and pitman arm. did that this morning, pulled everything out, pulled the transfer case, installed the sye, put that back in, dragged the front axle out (interesting) and rolled it down the street and around the corner to a neighbor's house who has all kinds of good **** in his garage, and a better welder then mine. got the spring perches welded on. they'd been drinking a little so they thought it was a great idea to roll it back with me and follow us on a dirtbike :) they were feeling pretty gung ho so they helped me drag it back in and put it underneath. it's just resting right now, nothing is bolted up, the jackstands weren't in key positions to lift the front up enough to bolt the springs to the shackles. a friend came by and helped me get the 8.8 underneath, we set the perches (ended up being 1/8" off center, oh well) and pinion angle (little tough, hopefully i got it ok) and i ran a couple beads on the inside of the perches. will do brake lines and bolt up the front tomorrow, then drive it down to my neighbors and weld the rear perches on well. enough bull****, here's the pics
edit, in the last 5 pictures it's not on jackstands anymore, that's pretty much final height. i've got 11" from the rear tire to the bottom of the flare lip, 22" to the skid plate, and i think 28" to the rockers. the tires are 35" x terrains.

Looks good. What springs are you running? I have waggy springs SOA and have similar height measurements as you do.

nice :beerchug:
i'm running the RE 1.5" soa springs with the reverse eye. i will be adding two more leafs to each pack to combat the dreaded axle wrap. i need to extend my front driveshaft, it barely fits. ran into a problem with a rear hardline last night, make sure you get STANDARD 3/16" hardlines for the 8.8, don't get a 3/16" japanese line...it definitely won't work :)

bestop tj flares. right now the transfer case won't shift and the brakes have no pressure...bled them a few times now. i guess more? tc is probably a bracket put on wrong.

chef, our Jeeps are very similar. RE SOA, 8.8, Canyon City, winch, 35's. :agree: :beerchug:

i'm having an issue bleeding my brakes...they simply will not bleed. i'll list what i've done, then what i THINK is the problem. let me know what you think please.
i've tried the squeeze bottle, i've tried the hose in the mason jar with some fluid in it and someone pumping the pedal, and tonight at 2 i went to the 24 hour auto zone to buy a vacuum pump, even that won't work. the squeeze bottle gives me a pretty solid stream with a few bubbles here and there, i listened to system of a down - toxicity 2 and a half times while bleeding the system with the squeeze bottle. i went round the horn with someone topping off the master cylinder and someone pumping the brakes and me manning the mason jar. i got a good stream out of that. the vacuum pump is kind of nice but i don't get a solid stream with it. when i put the hose into the master cylinder reservoir and let the vacuum loose i get a solid stream, but when it's off of the bleeder valves it's got a ton of small bubbles and not a steady stream of fluid.
so anyways, it's almost 4 am, i've gotta work tomorrow, and i reeeek of gear oil and brake fluid. please help. i need to get this damned thing moving. i THINK it might be one of the hardlines i replaced, i had to cut it down and flare the edge, but it was a single, not a double flare. could i be losing pressure there and sucking in air? it's not leaking fluid at all there...my homemade flare is coming off the T in the back. before the axle swap the brakes were perfect. the only thing i changed out was obviously the brakes on the rear axle and the two hardlines coming from the T in the back to each caliper.

nice rig Joe :) i'd love to go wheeling with you sometime. i want to go out with Jerry Bransford too, i bought some wheels from him a little while back. the two of you seem really down to earth and knowledgable. good guys to have on the trail.

Are the calipers on upside down??? I remember when I replaced all of my steel hard lines ( no axle swaps) and the rubber hoses with extended braided stainless steel ones; it took a long time to bleed them. Bleeder goes up!
They also have those speed bleeders that you replace your stock ones with and supposedly you loosen them and pump the brakes until you get a steady stream of fluid. They have a spring in them that closes it after your done pressing on the brake as to not draw in air. I've never used them but it's another option
