...because Zach at AtoZ Fabrications is the man!
I got my rockers installed yesterday and I am very, very happy with them. Zach is a stand up guy and a great person to deal with. (not to mention MUCH less $$$ than the competition) I've been researching rocker guards for a while and most were $300+ with, reportedly, flakey powdercoating. SO to make a long story short, I saw a thread on some of Zach's stuff and figured I couldn't go wrong. I was right :agree: OK, enough outta me, heres a few pics:

^ yeah check out Zach's site
He sells them to use with YJ flares, but it took very little grinding to get them to work with my TJ flares.
Jeepik, I thought about just using some angle iron, but I wanted a tube step and I don't have the means to bend tube, plus I wanted a set that went all the way up to the door sill and had just as much coverage underneath. 1/4" angle in that size (you can't get 3/16") is way heavy and is overkill IMO.

although my 3/16's angle iron hasnt gone yet, i have seen them buckle on other trucks, 1/4 inch is not overkill at all

Def not over kill I have bent the 1/2 plate on my steps.
If you think 1/4 is overkill you dont wheel it hard enough
contray to what most people today seen to go for, rock rails are for use, not looks

Cut to own satisfaction to fit with TJ/YJ or no flares. :agree:

my 20 bucks worth of 3"x5"x 3/16" angle iron rock rails work awsome. Bent some tube up and made myself some steps. Then rattlecanned em. this way when they get dinged up and scratched all i gotta do is bust out the spray can and give em a quick touch up. they run all the way up to the door sills and all the way to the fender openings front and rear. then are trimmed even with the fender openings with the TJ flares. (they run under the flares too)
Spending anything over 50 bucks for rock rails is insane

no spending $300 is insane. Spending $ to buy something you dont have the ability to make is not insane.
Spending SUPER amounts of $ on them is

Who would pay over $300? The Poison Spyder Customs(PSC) tie into the frame and are just under $200!($269 w/ side bar) I will weld a side bar on 'em myself as I wish to use some rectangular tubing. I like the countersunk bolts too on the PSC. I would pay for the PSC ones but the ones you post I would just make myself they look like simple angle iron, could be wrong on that but thats how they look. Maybe its just the bolts that make 'em look cheap.
As far as being crazy for spending the money I can make way more money in the time it would take me to make them like the PSC ones than $200!

Ability to make? Angle iron is already made. All you have to do is cut and drill and bolt up. Trust me, if *I* can do it...anyone can. :agree:
I used a pneumatic cut off tool, but ran out of my last wheel (on a Sunday night), so then I used a heavy wheel in an angle grinder alternating with a hacksaw. I rattle-canned them just like 92 Green YJ. Out of every mod on my YJ, this was one of the top 5 easiest.

Mine were 17.00, but now I feel like I could have done better. :) I have run mine over a lot of things, and they have held up great. Best 17.00 I have spent on my rig.

Dag, tough crowd around here :rotflmao: . I was simply making a shameless advertising post and everyone goes berserk and it turns into a pissing contest to see who made their rocker guards the cheapest  Anyways, just wanted to give a little credit to Zach. That is all.:beerchug:

with a step i mean.
honestly- even ask zach, to get a nice set of rails lookign good a decent amout of time is spent on each set. Cutting, welding, cleaning up (i stick weld), painting - they all take time
Time = $
I spent $10 on stuff and made a set just like them . What you paid you could have bought a little welder. Add the mods your going to do and buy a good welder.:naw: :rotflmao: :naw: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I have a welder:giveup: I just didn't have a way to bend the tube, nor did I have the time to actually make them. I usually like to make all my stuff too, but due to lack of time and a few resources, it was better for me to have a set made.

Would anyone see a problem with covering up some superficial tub rust (right behind the front fenders, below where is says "Joop", the classic spot for rust)? I like the looks of rockers, they are functional, and it'd make the rig look better by covering up the only bit of rust on it...thoughts? Note, the rest is rather minor, mostly just rippled paint...

3/16" 54" long with a break down the middle, the bottom ties in with my body mounts. the top is held in my 5 3/8" SS bolt's. I then RINO lined the outsides, and caulked the top and side edges.
Plenty strong in my mind. The Rino lining will get scraped off. but i mostly wanted it on the side where i kick my feet free of mud before getting bak in the jeep.

Ok, I am the big idiot of the bunch. I got screwed. I went to my Fab guy who has done a lot of work for me at a better price than anyone and makes it better and mounts it.
I went to him again and wanted rocker guards. This time he said it would be TIME + PARTS. It is the best set of rockers arround with a step and tied to frame and the ability to adjust for a 1 inch body lift but it wasn't worth the Flipin $750 im paying for them. WORST MISTAKE I HAVE EVER MADE> I should have bought from a mag and just had him beef them up for me.
:naw: :teary: :bangnerd: That will never happen again. Up front cost only.

$750---damn they better be gold plated. You need to talk to that guy. And you best better get a certified time card with how much time hes putting in. Even a REALLY nice set has a max of $80 worth of metal if you buy just hte metal, not in bulk, there for you are paying $670 for labor.... even at $67 an hr that is 10 hrs.. no f'in way

After I get mine back from the fab shop, I'll post a pic, but why would you tie something to the frame and the body??? the two will flex independently of each other and cause problems, and if you put angle iron and catch a corner its just gonna push the angle iron in...I had a set made that are welded to the frame and wrap around the body, kinda like an exo cage for the bottom of my jeep, and I'm not saying what it cost....:naw:

The PSC ones attach to the frame where the tub mounts are, utilizing those same mounts the tub is attached to, so no problems.

Yes I am stupid. His hourly rate was 40 an hour. He had never made them before so he had to do trial and error I guess.
As for attaching it to the frame and the body. Am I going to run into trouble with them flexing? I hope not. I am going to put a one inch body lift on as well and the rock slider will be adjustable. I hope I havent protected it too much. They are very stout and strong but not worth the money. LIVE N LEARN:banghead: :banghead:
