I have been having some problems with my clutch, I seem to be losing fluid. At first it was slow about every 2-3 weeks I had to bleed the lines if I didnt keep a close eye on the level. As time went on it got worse, so i checked out j.u. and did a search. After some reading i thought it was leaking out of the master cylinder at the firewall. Two days ago i replaced the master cylinder and thought problem solved. The next day I lost almost all fluid and i thought I left the bleeder Screw open so I filled the system and beed it again and 24 hours later it is epmty. I took it to a buddy who works on transmissions and he said he believes it is the hydrolic throwout bearing cause you can see fluid comming out of the tranmission. So my question is how hard would it be to replace the throwout bearing and should I replace the clutch while i am under there(110,000 miles). Also any Ideas, tips, experiances, ect would be greatly appreciated. 93 6cyl. I am aware I have to drop the tranny, never did a job that big before but look foward to tackling it!

Thanks \murf/

It's not too bad. Took me two days over two weekends. What can I say, I took my time, plus I needed to have flywheel turned which is tough to have done on the weekend.

My advice is get a tranmission jack. I rented one for $25/day. Hindsight, i would have bought Harbor Frieghts cheap one. Also remove the exhaust down pipe. The FSM doesn't mention that and I actually took the transmission out with it in and it was a pain. When I installed the tranny, I had it out and it was easy.

While you have it apart, and with that many miles on it, you should probably just go ahead and replace the clutch, wouldn't want to have it go out shortly after and have to do it again

Go ahead and replace the clutch as well, the extra 5 minutes it takes to throw on the new pressure plate and disk will be worth it in the long run.

LUK makes excellent clutches.

You might check the cylinder attached to the clutch pedal. Check for leakage where it come through the firewall in the engine compartment. Also check inside and see if it's leaking on the inside firewall. If it's leaking inside, you should see the paint is peeling off because the DOT-3 fluid takes the paint off in sheets right down the bare metal. This happend to me about six months ago.

Sequel, Did you raise your jeep??? I have a 3 1/2 inch lift with 33s so i think there is enough room under there what do you think?

I had plenty of room under mine to pull the tranny without jacking it up. I have about 6" total lift on 33's. The hardest part is just lining the shaft back up. Done it more than once, so it only takes an hour or two now.

Here's a handy tip for lining things up when reassembling:

Buy two long bolts of the same thread as the lower pair of bellhousing bolts. Get these bolts about 4-5 inches long. Cut off the heads of the bolts. Grind a taper into the cut-off end. Hacksaw or Dremel a screwdriver slot into the cut-off tapered end.

When you're ready to put the tranny on, insert the two alignment pins you just made into the lower block boltholes. Now you can slide the bellhousing and tranny over the pins, and get the input shaft into the clutch, ever so much easier. Then put the upper bolts in the bellhousing, remove the alignment pins, and replace them with the regular bolts.

This really works well, you should try it.

Hey murfdog - I didnt have the jeep on jack stands. My 3.5" lift provided plenty of room underneath.

You should have listened to me and pulled the exhaust downpipe down. Makes it 10x easier. I would take it off before you put the tranny back in.

I separated the t/c from the tranny when i had it out. I did that because i thought it would be easier to put back in around the downpipe. If you take the downpipe off, you shouldn't need to separate the two.
