Does anyone know if the 92 yj speedometer sensor is electronic or cable? I'm trying to diagnose an intermittantly working speedometer.

I'm pretty sure its electronic because I am having problems with my 92 YJ speedometer as well. Mine does not work at all. There is no cable running into the speedometer, just the circuit on the back. I think my problem is the sensor and not the speedometer....

Thanks, I think you're right about it being electronic, it looks like there is only wires coming from the sensor, not any cables. I am going to pull the sensor and check the gears. If the gears are ok I'll try replacing the sensor.

Yes it is electronic on a 92. Let me just tell you guys, I would pull the speedometer out of the dash first and check that. I had the same problem as both of you. It started working intermittedly and then finally crapped out. I replaced the sensor thinking that was it. And the first problem I had was I went to the dealer to get the part. They gave me a senor but the connector was changed. So I had to cut the old connector off and splice the new one in. THat didn't do anything. So I just left it for awhile. Well finally I had time a couple weekends ago and I took the dash apart. Well as it turns out, there is a ribbon cable that has circuits printed on it and all those circuits run to the guages. On the back of the speedometer one, it must have gotten wet over time and the circuit got corroded. Thats why mine didn't work. So now I just got a speedometer out of a junkyard YJ and I am gonna replace mine. A new ribbon cable was $200. And another tip, if you do replace the sensor, try going to a Napa if you have one near you. They sell them and they might have the original connector on it. Best of luck to you guys. Hope this info might have helped.

I just pulled my dash apart today and took the circuit ribbon off completely. Around the one corner there is a lot of corrosion and one of the lines is cut. I'm guessing this is my problem because there is no connectivity across some of those leads. I am going to try and repair it using a marker that is designed to connect broken leads on a circuit board. This is going to be a pain but it is less costly than buying a new one. I'll let you guys know if it works.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I would check the circuit ribbon before you start replacing anything. I thought it was my sensor and, hopefully, I found the real problem..... my circuit ribbon.

Well, I just replaced the speed sensor today (Autozone had one in stock) for $40 and everything seems to be working great now. Good luck to you with the circuit repair.
