I too am in the market for a new head unit. I can tell you that I have had very bad luck with Sony CD players skipping. My last 5 head units have been sonys and they all had skipping issues. I am looking at getting one of those Xtreme Audio CD players that they have at Wal Mart, and Best Buy. They are only $49 so if it gets stolen, damaged or broken It won't be a big deal to replace.
Anyone else ever use one of these decks?

is there some type of bracket needed to install the radio? i just put my sleeve in and strapped the radio down to the bottom of the dash frame with metal pipe hangers.

I had a Pioneer DEH-P4300 in my Blazer when it (the Blazer) died on me. I moved it over to my 92 Wrangler. It never skipped in my Blazer and its 5 years old and still works like its brand new. The mounting kit I bought for the Blazer has a small metal strap that attached to the back of the cd deck and I was able to attach that to a metal support where the old player was in the dash. The thing doesn't move at all and never skips.
My brother just got a new Pioneer deck on ebay for $150 that goes for $240. Its a bit fancy for my taste, but they are worth the money, in my opinion. If I have to get another one, I will buy Pioneer again.
Mostly, I think any CD player from any name brand will handle the rough rides. The guy at Bestbuy said almost all new models have some sort of anti-skip in them so you should be good with any brand. Best thing to do is just find one with the features you want (MP3, sub/amp preouts, remote control, etc.).

My friend is strictly Alpine and I am stricky Pioneer. They are both amazing head units (and speakers, subs, amps, etc.). Find one with the best anti-skip protection. It's probably a category that they have, or maybe someone at an car/truck audio place would know?

Alpine all the way for me. I have had Alpines in my last two YJ's and have never had them skip. My rig rides pretty rough too. Here is what I have now, plays mp3's and is XM radio ready (so it says)

Another thumbs up for Pioneer. Mine hardly skips at all (Way better than the OEM Pioneer system in my Mom's Miata)

I'll toss in a vote for Clarion decks. My last deck in my YJ was a Clarion and it never skipped once, even when i was wheelin hard. after two years it finally got a bit too much mud on it and it died, so I replaced it with a Clarion Mp3/CD deck that i got of ebay for like 120 bucks. I absolutly love it. it never skips and i can get 10.5 hours of tunes on one cd!! :agree:

I got a sonly mp3 cd player with remote but will probably move to some kind of mp3 jukebox setup in the future so I can have all my music with me not just 170-230 or so songs on 1 cd.

Alpine CDA 9813 is a badazz head unit. I have one in my XJ and I have yet to hit something hard enough to make it skip.

Pioneer P4400 cheap, adequete. Sure I would like to have a 9300 or better but after cooking one (just a trickle of water in my YJ) it isnt worth it unless you are doing some major custom install (waterproofing)

I run the pioneer DEHp2500 in my YJ.. I like it because its simple, but it has a flip down face, so it protects the CD slot from getting too dirty.. cost my $159 at best buy.

i struggled with this for a long time because the rough ride in offroading will eventually damage the cd and it'll skip. if you're looking cheap, i got an aiwa head unit for a little over $100 from crutchfield. its got a remote and cd player etc, but the kicker is that it has a frontal digital port. so when im offroading i can hook up my mp3 player to it with a headphone cable and not have to worry at all about damage. other cool thing is that i can connect it to my CB with that input and use my speakers as external speakers or as a PA system. im really into multifunctional things, so this might be another way to go.

That's why I almost always use copied cd's

I have the $50 wal-mart special in mine. Hasn't skipped yet, but I haven't really shook the jeep up enough to see if it shakes. So far so good!:agree: I have two 6" in the back in a box and 4x6's in the front.

pioneer is generally a decent deck for the price and usually skipless in many applications I have installed them in.i have an alpine in mine and it has been great ,but go with a pioneer if you are on a budget and I think you will be happy

i have a 94 YJ, and i didnt use a mounting bracket. when i took out the stock radio, i re-used that bracket. radio sits flush...kinda nice install. i also have an alpine unit. it has skipped on a couple hard bumps, but i really like it. i also like that it tilts so it's angled up to me when im driving.
