View Full Version : Warn Hub Conversion Problem
I've got a YJ running the D30 warn hub conversion with Warn alloy shafts and the 297 ujoint. Problem is when the passenger side (long side) is locked, I get a vibration at about 35mph. It seems that there is alot of play in the outer shaft where it goes through the wheel hub. I can move it up and down slightly. I'm assuming this is the problem, but before I tear it all apart, I was hoping to get some info, from someone who may have seen this or put one of these kits in.
I didnt put the kit in, so I'm not sure what is inside the wheel hub. I'm thinking bad bearings, but again I'm not sure what else is in there.
Anybody who has put in the kit, have any ideas?
Thanks,
Glenn
PS: its not Ujoints, just put new ones in.

you don't say what your mileage is, but worn out bearings is a possibility. They are replaced as a unit, cost is about $130 so you probably want to eliminate other possibilities first. Outside of bearings nothing immediately comes to mind...
You say it is only with the hub locked....

I wouldnt' rule out the ujoint, they're squirly and if ya didn't get it in right or a needle bearing is missing that joint is toast. Since ya have the warn hub conversion the unit bearing is a non issue. I would focus on teh shaft and ujoint. If there is any play at all where the two shafts meet at the ujoint, then that's you're problem.

if he can move the stub shaft that has nothing to do with the u-joint, up and down
yes, it vibrates only if that side is locked and tcase is in 4wd. If in 4wd with hub unlocked, no vibration. Other side is OK, it also has alittle play in it, but not as much.

A previous poster indicated the hubs are a single unit. That is incorrect. The Warn kit has eliminated the non-serviceable hubs that came on the stock units.
It's a pretty simple setup actually. I would probably suspect a bad bearing and it's worth investigating sooner rather than later.

Are you sure it isn't your front driveshaft causing that vibration? Your modifications eliminated your front axle disconnect, so your front shaft now spins constantly when the hubs are locked. If you have a locker, then only one hub needs to be locked to achieve this.
You might try disconnecting the front shaft, to see if it eliminates the problem.

I should add that I installed one of these kits on my Jeep, and can tell you that a little play where the stub shaft comes through the spindle is normal.
Is this something that started recently, or did the problem originate at the same time the kit was installed? If the problem didn't exist when the kit was first installed, then you can ignore my suggestion about the front shaft. :puzzled:

he said there is no vibes when the hubs are unlocked and is in 4wd, that would mean the shaft is spinning...therefore it shouldnt be the front driveshaft..right???

Yes, you would think so. But if it is a wheel bearing problem, what difference would it make whether his hub is locked or not?
Its not the front drive shaft. If I unlock that hub, leaving the other locked with the tcase in 4wd, there is no vibration. Its something on the long side.
My locker is an ARB, which is disengaged, so that should not be a factor.
Thanks for the responses. Keep 'em coming. I've got another week before I can get around to tearing it apart.
