so i was driving down 29 going back to good old charlottesville and started getting really bad vibes, next thing i know i hear the clank from the rear and get out figuring i broke a u-joint. instead, the back bellhousing of my transfer case is broken off as well. so i need to get a new transfer case but im on a college budget and was wondering if there was an cheap upgraded case or if i should just have a shop replace the one in there. btw this is an 87 with the peugot tranny all pretty much stock

Well, it sounds like you have a couple problems. One being that the Peugot tranny stinks. The other is that the Peugot has a 21 spline output. So your quickest and easiest fix would be to find an NP231 out of a 4 cyl jeep, should be $200-$300 and you can replace it yourself in a Saturday. However, I think this would be a good time to upgrade from the Peugot to an AX-15 and get a 23 spline NP231, assuming you have time and $$. You could find an AX-15/Np231 combo for $500-$600, but you would need a place to work on it.

You can buy a new T/Case tail shaft housing for around $60 from dealer, new seal for $3 and install in vehicale w/commen hand tools. Might need snap ring pliers can't remember but dont think so. No need to pull transmission or T/case. The tail shaft housing does not break for nothing you might have an output shaft or rear drive shaft issue. You did not mention if your out put shaft was bent or damaged. If so it can be changed without removing T/case also. If this is case and you have a lift it would probably be better in long run to do a SYE mod. Excessive drive shaft angles is harder on your drive train and could have contributed to this condition.
