This weekend while wheeling I started to hear a whirr from the front of the motor. Figured that mud got into and idler or my A/C clutch, no big deal.
Today I hear a loud metallic knocking from the front near the fan. It would come and go and change tempo somewhat with RPM's but not as directly as the pistons or valves would. I could hear it at idle also. The Jeep was running fine with good power. When it was not knocking it still had a faint whirr. I found a wobbly idler pully so I figured the bearings were giving up.

Now 4 hours later I go to start it and no go. I've got spark and fuel  I started it no less than 5 times while diagnosing the noise.

Any clues? I'm thinking timing chain right now because I can smell hints of raw fuel when I crank it over :headpop:

Unplug the crank sensor on the top of the bellhousing for about 10 min and then pug it back in, that might fix it.

did you check for spark at the spark plugs... take one out and see what you get.. if its a big jolt then the electrical is good so far anyways.
if thats bad then diagnose it all the way down to the ingniton coil.
Do the Crankshaft sensor too as suggested, that also might work for you..
did you go a check engine code read? ignition key on and off three times to get your read out if you need help with that let us know.
if you are getting fuel, the eletrical side is where you should start.

My bros 93 just had some problems like you are explaining, it was a mix between the ECM under the dash, and his drive gear on the distributor. He was getting no spark at all, fixed the ECM, and then had power again, and would barely run, and the timing jumped 30 degrees, got a new drive gear and rotated until it was all good. Good luck.
