My syncros are not getting any better so since I have time I would like to start watchin for a x15 with less miles that what i got now (172,000). What years can I use? my jeep is a 93 so I guess any 91-95 would work correct? Would any of the newer 97-2003 work? anything else I need to think about for this job? I might replace the shifter with a short throw when i put a new trans in (not sure if they will work with a 1" body lift though???). Obv. I would replace the clutch, slave, all that crapola while im under there. thanks

Bolt pattern on all I6 trannys are the same and the spline count is the same. Any year will fit, if you go with a much newer one 94+ it will have an external slave cylinder. I have the P/N you will need at the house if you want it. Also you might want to look at the NV3550, its a better trans and pretty much a bolt in.
Educate me please, :zdunce: how do you know the syncros are bad.

well the throw from 1st to 2nd is crap. Doesn't go in easy at all. when its cold out it slips out of 4th until it warms up. It is hard to get into 1st so I ahve to go into 3rd or 4th and then into 1st. that and as far as i know its the stock trans with 172,000 miles.

So the bolt pattern is the same for the bell housing and np231? The external slave goes where? mounts the the trans or somewhere on the fire wall? would i need a new bell housing cuz the old one has the internal slave? need a little education on this part. Part number would be great if you can get it. I am in the process of educating myself and pricing up parts for the job. I got the finances together just need to know how much im looking at and whats involved. Got buddies with shops to help and I can turn a wrench. Thought about teh NV3550 also an atlasII and D44 front and rear but im not into hard core crawling just my DD and some off road. It is a jeep right. So i think im stickin with the x15 and will eventually rebuild or buy a newer np231 and put a sye in. I like having the ability to hump home on the front drive train if needed. thanks for the info and help.

Yes the bolt patterns are the same for both bell housing and np231, but you will need a different bell housing for the external slave setup. The slave bolts onto the transmission where the lines normally went into your old trans.

1991-2000 AX-15 are the same. In 94 they changed the bellhousing to the external slave cylinder design (MUCH better design). An excellent alternative is the NV3550 from a 2001-present TJ. Apparently they shift much smoother. They will bolt up directly. Just make sure you use the clutch stuff for the TJ. The NV3550 is almost identical in size to the AX15 (so you dont have to make any driveshaft changes). This choice is more expensive, but if you find one out of a totalled TJ, you would have a good tranny for a good price.

a np231 will bolt up to a NV3550? I would need the bell housing/ecternal slave, master, and new shifter for the NV3550? I think just for ease i am looking for a x15 from a 94-00 with the bell housing, and clutch (easier to replace if one is already there).

The NP231 will bolt right up to the NV3550. I have a 90 YJ with an 2000 NV3550 and the 1990 NP231. Get the shifter for the NV3550 with the transmission, just ask the yard for the Transmission/shifter including bell housing. The clutch master slave cylinder you will need to use is P/N 1-52104113 94-95 YJ. The TJ clutch master/slave cylinder is too long to fit behind the brake master cylinder. I had to drill a new mounting hole in the mounting plate to make it work, but that was it.. Direct bolt on other than that.

Ron90yj, that part number is from where??? So i am pickin up a 97 x15, bell housing, and shifter from a guy near my house. It only has 30K on it and i'm told it runs perfectly. So help me out with a step by step and some other parts i might need. I will have a couple buddies helping me out and they are a bit more educated than I.
I figure:
disconnect neg batter cable
Jack up, support engine
drain trans, xcase
pull drive shafts (F/R)
drop skid plate
remove electical wires and anything plugged in
remove exhaust connection
remove shift nobs from both shifters
unbolt bell housing from engine (need female torx fro top two bolts)
use trans jack to support trans and case
pull it off and away
Separate teh case and bolt up to new trans
install new clutch, slave, master and line
line everyting up and go in opposite order?
what did i miss?? any other parts I might need?
fluid, rtv, gaskets?
Thanks Tim

The part number is the dealership part number I took it right off the box. If that number isn't right for some reason its for a 94-95 YJ.

is that just part just the slave or is it the whole thing(master, line, slave)? i know they are all sealed so if it goes bad it all gets replaced? right? What did you pay for it from the stealership? thanks Tim

That is the whole thing, Master cylinder, Line, Slave Cylinder, pre bled and full of fluid. It ran me about $170 from the dealership, but the YJ is my only vehicle and everywhere else had to order it. I am sure you can get them from an autoparts place.
