Since my entire Jeep life has been spent under the roof (and soometimes hood & floor) of my XJ, my knowledge on YJ's is limited.

With the 4.0 engine, are they reliable? prone to the usual 4.0 gremlins, I expect.

Any way to smooth out the ride effectively, while adding lift, 32's - 33's and having good artculation?

Let's assume a 1993 model - any tranny worries, unless I abuse it, leave water in it, etc?

The usual asle combos? - 30/35 - 35/8.25, etc?

I appreciate any info you guys can share.

I ask because I came across one yesterday for a coupe of grand and my wife thinks I should jump on it. That alone makes me want to pull the trigger - but I know she'll freak if I end up a parts vendor for anyone with a '93 YJ and it rots in the yard...LOL

a 4.0 in a 93 will be a very reliable motor if its well maintained as any 91 and later 4.0. It will have the normal gremlins but if you already know about them and how to handle it then its a non-issue.

Depending on what you want to do with it, how you drive, and what tires you end up running either 32/33's the D35 may be ok to unless you lock it and like to use loads of skinny pedal. the D30 with those tires should hold up pretty good also.

Auto trans I can't comment on, never even drove a YJ with an auto.

For a smooth ride with a lift look at the RE XD, BDS, Rancho, with some good shocks. Shocks will make one hell of a difference.

Thanks Ron.

It's a 5spd, so that's cool.

...and I'm not to interested in destroying things - I granny my XJ now - so i think the "smaller" axles will live under my foot. Open diff's for now are cool - just helps me leanr how to drive better.:clapping:

A 5spd will be the AX-15, if you take care of it and be easy on it that tranny it will be ok. I swapped out to an NV3550 out of a TJ because I had went through 2 AX-15's in about 6 years. But I drive like a fool. :rotflmao:

I was on 31's and open diff's doing stuff guys on 33's and locked were doing at one time, I think learning while still open give you more driver skill, and that will take you alot further and be better for your vehicle than having a vehicle that is 70% vehicle and only 30% driver skill.

I used to wheel with a guy that liked to take a stock vehicle out once in a while just so he could remember how to drive with out the lockers and lifts and low gearing so he didn't lose his edge. This guy on 36" tires and going places guys on 42-44's are going.

i got a 93 4.0 x15 d30/35 with 3.07 gears (mostly stock gear for that year / model). I have 172,000. No drive train problems. Shifting a little stiff but other than that the 93's are a great year for 4.0 YJ's. I'm keepin mine for a long time.
